Swimming Club Near Me in Hell's Kitchen: Team New York Aquatics

Team New York Aquatics, the LGBTQ+ inclusive masters team founded in 1990, runs most Manhattan practices at the John Jay College pool, 899 Tenth Avenue. New swimmers get a free 30-day trial with two practices. Full members pay $29.50 a quarter plus practice fees from $35.

Team New York Aquatics does not sell lap swim, and it does not let anyone book a lane on their own: every session is a coached workout, and you have to be a trial or full member before you get in the water. Its busiest Manhattan home is the 25-yard pool on the C Level of Haaren Hall at John Jay College, 899 Tenth Avenue, between 58th and 59th Streets. Your first two practices are free under a 30-day trial. If your search for a swimming club near me means you want a coach on deck and a lane full of people at your speed, start here.

A Team Built for the 1990 Gay Games

TNYA was founded in 1990 to get swimmers ready for Gay Games III in Vancouver, and it now calls itself the largest LGBTQ+-inclusive aquatics team in the world. It is a 100 percent volunteer-run 501(c)(3), a founding member of IGLA+, and registered with U.S. Masters Swimming. You do not need to be LGBTQ+ to join. The team's own wording is that allies are warmly welcome. The one hard limit is age: members must be over 20.

The One Hour Swim says the most about the team's character. TNYA first entered that charity swim in 1990, at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the money went to medical bills for teammates who were sick. The tradition continues: in 2026 half of the donations go to the Alliance for Positive Change and half to TNYA scholarships. People still stay for decades. High-intensity coach Brian Cairns has been a member since 2003.

Finding the Pool Inside John Jay College

Take the A, B, C, D or 1 train to 59 St-Columbus Circle and walk west along 59th Street to Tenth Avenue. There are Citi Bike docks on Tenth and on Eleventh Avenue between 58th and 59th. Do not go to the outdoor John Jay Pool on the Upper East Side by mistake. The team warns about the mix-up on its pools page. Bring photo ID, because college security checks everyone at the door.

Renovation work changed the entrance in 2026, so swimmers were sent in through the 11th Avenue or 59th Street doors rather than Tenth Avenue. The security line can be long at 6:30 am and 7 pm, so the team asks you to arrive ten minutes early. Once inside, head down to the C Level. The deck can only be reached through the locker rooms, and the gender-neutral bathroom is reached by walking through the gendered ones.

The Pool and Its House Rules

The John Jay pool is 25 yards long with five lanes and runs from 4 feet deep to 13.4 feet at the deep end. Five lanes and twenty or more swimmers per coach means lanes are shared. Everyone wears a cap, and the rule card is blunt about it: caps are required regardless of hair, even if you are bald. Shower before you get in, never dive from the shallow end, and keep shoes and food off the deck.

Water is allowed only in a closed bottle, so leave the open coffee cup in the locker. TNYA's packing list is short: swim cap, towel and photo ID, plus whatever fins or paddles you train with. An introduction to lane etiquette is linked from the swim page and is worth reading before you arrive, since you will be sharing a lane with strangers on the clock from the first set.

Picking the Right Workout on the Fall 2026 Schedule

The schedule posted on August 28, 2026 gives John Jay nine of the team's 22 weekly sessions. There are Rainbow workouts at 6:30 am on Tuesday and Thursday and at 7 pm on Wednesday. High Intensity runs 7 to 8:30 pm on Monday and 11 am on Saturday, then Low Pressure Zone and Technique Development take the pool from 12:30 to 2 pm. Friday at 7 pm is Multisport, aimed at triathletes and open-water swimmers, alongside Adult Learn-to-Swim.

Every practice except Learn-to-Swim asks that you can swim 50 yards in under two minutes. If that is a stretch, Low Pressure Zone keeps the ratio near one coach for 15 swimmers, against roughly 1:20 to 1:30 in Rainbow and High Intensity. The coaching bench has real pedigree. Emily Fogle, who runs Saturday morning High Intensity, was a five-time Division I All-American at Purdue and swam at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials.

What the Fees Actually Come To

The fees page, updated July 15, 2026, starts with the free trial: 30 days, two practices, once per lifetime. Next is an extended trial at $75 for five practices in 30 days. Full membership is $29.50 a quarter on a one-year commitment, and practices are paid on top. A single practice costs $35 and a ten-pack $295, valid for a year. Monthly subscriptions run from $95 for once a week to $185 unlimited.

Adult Learn-to-Swim is a separate eight-class course at $24.50 a class, or $194 for the whole course, with no membership needed and two free team practices afterward. The coach ratio there is 1:3. Visitors without a home in the New York-Newark area can buy a $19.50 yearly visiting membership and pay per practice, but the form needs 48 hours to process. Ask about the Paul Fortoul Fund if price is the obstacle. It takes financial aid applications every quarter.

Booking, Waitlists and Your First Morning

Practices open for booking a week ahead through Mindbody, and the team week runs Monday to Sunday. Cancel up to two hours before and you keep your pass. Cancel later and it is gone, and a no-show adds a $20 fee. Arrive more than ten minutes late to a full workout and your spot can go to someone waiting on deck. Popular slots carry waitlists, but the team notes that they clear quickly, so join one rather than give up.

For a first visit, the advice on the swim page is to show up 20 minutes early and introduce yourself to the coach on deck, who will place you in a lane. That is the best reason to choose a 7 pm weekday slot over the 6:30 am ones, when security lines and a fast first set leave little time to chat. Skip Monday High Intensity as a first workout. It is a 90-minute session, the hardest tier on the team's own ladder, and the coach will have little time for a newcomer.

If John Jay Is Full

The same membership covers four other pools, so a waitlisted night is not a lost night. BMCC at 199 Chambers Street in Tribeca hosts swim, artistic swimming and Learn-to-Swim on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday at noon. You fill in a visitor form at every entry. Berkeley Carroll's athletic center at 762 President Street in Park Slope is new this fall, with Rainbow on Monday and Wednesday and Learn-to-Swim from October.

Water polo players meet on Tuesday nights at the Seahorse pool, 69 Columbia Street on the Lower East Side, and the Bronx group swims Thursday at Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse. After a Saturday session at John Jay, walk five or six blocks southwest to DeWitt Clinton Park, which has filled the block between 52nd and 54th Streets and Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues since 1905. A March 2026 state environmental notice covers work at its north end, near 54th Street.

Practical Notes

Contact is by email only, at mail@tnya.org. There is no published phone number, and the team aims to answer within three days. The address at 1178 Broadway is a mailbox, not a pool, so do not go there. The season's social calendar is busy too. Tickets for the holiday banquet at Ainslie Bowery, held on the first Saturday of December, went on sale on October 17, 2026. Before your trial, keep three things in your bag: photo ID for security, a cap, and a closed water bottle.
