Swimming Club Near Me in the East Village: 14th Street Y Pool

The 14th Street Y at 344 East 14th Street keeps a 20-yard pool at 84 degrees, open to members from 6 AM on weekdays. Adult membership costs $102 a month, private 30-minute lessons $65 for members, and adult Learn to Swim runs four times a week.

The pool at the 14th Street Y is 20 yards long, not 25, and the water is held at 84 degrees, with the deck kept between 80 and 84. It sits inside the Sol Goldman YM-YWHA at 344 East 14th Street near First Avenue, a Jewish community center that welcomes members of any background. Adult membership costs $102 a month and includes lap swim. If a swimming club near me means a neighborhood pool where the same faces show up at 6 AM, this is it.

A Community Center That Happens to Have a Pool

The Y traces its roots to the turn of the last century and became part of Educational Alliance, the downtown nonprofit, in the early 1990s. The aquatics page says the center has run this climate-controlled pool since the early 1990s. In 2009 the Jewish Telegraphic Agency described it as a twenty-year-old neighborhood oasis, just after a summer overhaul. Today more than 250 people swim here each day, according to the Y itself.

One local listing sums the place up as a community center that happens to have a pool, not the other way around, with daily-workout regulars sharing the building with theater groups in rehearsal. That is the right expectation. You will pass toddlers in Red Cross classes with names like Little Dippers and Baby Belugas on your way to the deck. The aquatics director has been on staff for more than 20 years.

Getting to 344 East 14th Street

The L train stops at First Avenue, a short walk away, and the First Avenue station now has entrances on both First Avenue and Avenue A. From the 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R or W, get off at Union Square and walk east along 14th Street for about half a mile. The Y's own directions also list the M14A and M14D buses, the M15 and M15-SBS on First and Second Avenues, and the M101, M102 and M103.

Bring photo ID if you are coming as a guest. Anyone 13 and over who visits on a guest pass must show ID and sign a waiver each time. Members' own lockers are free for daytime use, but nothing can stay overnight, and day-use lockers are clipped periodically. Annual locker rentals run January to December and are sold only to members at the Service Desk, which also sells swim caps if you forget yours.

Lap Swim Blocks and When Lanes Open Up

Early Bird lap swim starts at 6 AM every weekday and 7 AM on weekends. It runs until 9 or 10 AM depending on the day. Lunch lap swim fills the noon to 2 PM window Monday through Friday, and evening adult lap swim picks up at 7:30 or 8 PM and goes to 9:30 PM from Monday to Thursday. Friday evening runs 6 to 8 PM. On weekends there is a second block from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, then a last one in the evening.

Full lap blocks use four lanes. The trap is the Open Adult Swim slots, which get only two lanes because aqua aerobics or classes have the rest. One review notes that you will share lanes with water aerobics if you skip the schedule. Lunch is the best bet if you want the full four lanes. Skip the Sunday 11:30 AM hour if you can, because it is the only lap window between Early Bird and the 6:30 PM evening slot.

Lane Etiquette the Lifeguards Enforce

The rules here are posted in capital letters. Every lane circle-swims counterclockwise, however many people are in it, and there is absolutely no passing in the middle of the lane. If someone is on your feet, stop at the wall and let them go. Lanes are marked slow, medium and fast. Stationary exercise is banned during lap swim, and so are hyperventilation and breath-holding games.

Caps are required for every swimmer, adults and babies alike, and you shower at the deck shower before getting in. Street shoes, food, glass and phones stay off the deck. There is no towel service, so pack a suit, cap and towel from home, plus a padlock, which the Y strongly recommends. Sandals are worth bringing for the walk to the saunas, which the Y says are open again.

Lessons, Learn to Swim and the Aqua Jets

Adults who never learned can join Learn to Swim on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, or Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 3 PM. The class covers freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and water safety, taught by Red Cross-certified lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors. Group classes are fee-based and booked through the Y's Daxko system, in person or by phone. Trial classes are offered for a fee when there is space.

Private 30-minute lessons cost $65 for members and $80 for non-members, and a semi-private lesson for two is $60 a person for members. A package of ten plus one free costs $650 for members or $800 for non-members, and the request form includes a Tri/Fitness level for adults working on triathlon swimming. Expect a reply in five to seven business days. Kids aged 6 to 17 at level 5 or above can join the Aqua Jets, a non-competitive team that practices Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 PM.

What a Membership Costs

Monthly dues are printed on the membership page: $102 for an individual adult, $92 for a student, $70 for a senior and $167 for a couple. A family with one adult pays $137, with two adults $190, and a teen membership is $47. Every membership includes adult lap swim, six guest passes a year and one free personal-training session. There is a two-month minimum before you can cancel.

Guest passes have worked at the pool since April 2022, so a member can bring a friend for a swim. Non-members arriving without a member need a day pass, though the Y does not print the price online. Visitors from out of state who belong to another JCC can use their home membership here for up to two weeks a year, with written proof of good standing.

Women's Swims and Other House Customs

Women Only swims run on Tuesday and Thursday from 11 AM to noon and on Sunday from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. The Y set these hours to accommodate religious modesty. The Sirovich older-adult center has its own pool hour on Monday at 2 PM. Children 12 and under cannot swim during lap blocks, and kids over 6 may not use the opposite-sex locker room. A family changing room is on the first floor.

Plan around the holidays. On Election Day, November 3, only adult lap swim and family swim run. The building closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and aquatics shut at 5:30 PM on November 27, December 24 and December 31. There are no classes on September 21, October 12, November 3 or November 26 to 29.

After Your Swim on 14th Street

Walk a block and a half west to Caffetto at 211 East 14th Street, a coffee shop by day and a wine bar by night with panini and tapas. The Infatuation added it to its new-places list in August 2026. If Early Bird lanes are crammed on a Monday, swap to the lunch block instead of waiting on the wall.
