Astoria Retro Diner Open From 5 am: Bel Aire Diner

Bel Aire Diner at 31-91 21st Street in Astoria opens at 5 am daily and runs to 2 am most nights. Order the $11.99 disco fries and claim a booth before midnight.

Bel Aire Diner, at 31-91 21st Street in Astoria, opens at 5 am every day and stays open until 2 am from Tuesday through Sunday, closing at midnight on Mondays. It has held this corner of Queens since 1965 and calls itself Astoria's longest-running diner, which makes it the obvious retro diner for a pre-dawn breakfast, a post-show plate of disco fries, or a family dinner where nobody agrees on what to eat.

Since 1965, and a Drive-In in 2020

The diner's own story is short and proud: it has been nestled in the heart of Astoria since 1965 and is open 365 days a year, from early morning to late night. Inside, the owners lean into a retro-inspired interior with warm lighting, and the room runs on the classic Greek-American diner model, where one laminated menu covers breakfast platters, steaks, souvlaki and banana splits without anyone blinking.

The diner's most famous recent chapter came in the spring of 2020, when dining rooms across the city were shut. Bel Aire turned its parking lot into a retro drive-in movie theater, with carhop-style food delivered to cars, and the idea drew coverage from The New Yorker, CNN, Time Out and Eater. The press page on its website still lists those stories next to a visit from Bobby Flay and a segment from Eyewitness News.

That mix explains the crowd. Astoria families split pancakes and burgers in the booths, people coming off late shifts drift in for eggs, and the after-midnight crowd shows up hungry once the neighborhood bars wind down. The diner offers 10 percent off for seniors every day, plus 10 percent for teachers from the Department of Education, Con Edison crews, civil servants, military and police with ID.

What to Order From the Big Menu

Disco fries are the house signature and cost $11.99: thick steak fries, melted mozzarella and homemade gravy. If you want something heavier, the Bel Aire Tater Tots come topped with bacon, Muenster cheese and gravy for $13.99. Both are built for sharing, and one plate covers two or three people as a starter. Pair them with a $3.99 fountain soda or fresh lemonade at $4.00 rather than a full entrée if it is past midnight.

Breakfast runs from homemade buttermilk pancakes at $12.99 to S'mores and Oreo Cheesecake pancakes at $16.99 each. Chicken and Waffles, made with buttermilk chicken tenders and homemade hot honey, costs $20.99, and the Candy Store Waffle is $18.99. The diner's own FAQ points first-timers to the Chicken Souvlaki, which comes as a platter for $22.89, a reminder that the Greek side of the kitchen is the strongest part of the menu.

For dinner, the Reuben with corned beef is $19.29, the bacon cheeseburger is $18.99 and the chili cheeseburger is $19.29. The 18 oz NY cut sirloin is $39.99, a steakhouse portion at a diner price, and the Cajun shrimp and grits cost $27.55. Skip the shrimp and grits; it is the menu's furthest reach from what the kitchen does best. End with the famous cheesecake at $6.99 a slice, or a $15.95 banana split for the table.

Booths, Groups and the Tuesday Kids Deal

Walk-ins are the norm, but the diner does take reservations for groups, and its party space suits gatherings from six to eighty guests. That makes it one of the easier places in western Queens to book a birthday dinner for twenty without a private-room minimum. Catering is buffet style, covering American, Greek, Italian and Mexican food, and cancellations made at least 48 hours ahead get a full refund.

Tuesday is the night to bring children. Under the Kids Eat Free promotion, kids aged 12 and under get a free meal with each adult entrée, and the kids shake costs $5.00 on other days. Payment is easy: cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are all accepted, and the FAQ says there is no surcharge on credit cards, a rarity among city diners in 2026.

Timing matters more than at most diners because the room is busiest at odd hours. Weekend brunch fills the booths, and Friday and Saturday nights bring the bar crowd after midnight. The quietest window is the first couple of hours after the doors open, when a $2.99 coffee and a booth by the window are easy to get. If the wait for brunch passes half an hour, take the order to go and eat it in the park instead.

The diner also keeps a running calendar of themed days, and the 2026 list marks Halloween on Saturday, October 31, National Sandwich Day on Tuesday, November 3, Thanksgiving on November 26, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Because the doors stay open 365 days a year, it is one of the few sit-down options in the neighborhood on holiday mornings, when families who skipped cooking fill the room by late morning.

From 21st Street to the East River

The diner sits on 21st Street near Broadway in western Astoria. From the Broadway station on the N and W lines, walk about ten minutes west along Broadway, past bakeries and cafés, to reach the door. The Q69 bus runs along 21st Street if you are coming from Long Island City, and street parking is easier here at 6 am than on 30th Avenue later in the day.

After a meal, continue west on Broadway to Socrates Sculpture Park, a free waterfront park with large outdoor installations and a skyline view across the East River. The Noguchi Museum sits a block away, which turns a diner breakfast into a full morning of art. On summer evenings, Astoria Park to the north, under the Hell Gate and Triborough bridges, is the place to walk off a plate of disco fries.
