Coconut Grove is the oldest continuously inhabited neighbourhood in Miami and one of the few that is genuinely shaded, which makes it a better place to eat in September than almost anywhere else in the city. A best restaurants near me search here will surface Krüs Kitchen at 3413 Main Highway, and the useful thing to know about it is not the cooking but the timetable.

The weekend adds a service the weekdays do not have
Monday is closed. Tuesday through Thursday the kitchen runs 5:30pm to 10pm, Friday 5:30pm to 11pm. Saturday adds a lunch service from 11am to 3pm before dinner from 5:30pm to 11pm, and Sunday repeats that lunch window with dinner from 5:30pm to 10pm.
That weekend midday service is the part worth targeting. It is the same kitchen, it is significantly easier to book than a Friday or Saturday evening, and Coconut Grove in daylight is the version of the neighbourhood that justifies coming.
A Michelin Guide listing is not a Michelin star
Worth being precise about, because the two get conflated constantly. Appearing in the Michelin Guide means inspectors visited and thought the room was worth recording; a star is a separate and much narrower award. A Guide entry is a reliable signal of a serious kitchen without the pricing and formality that a star usually brings with it.
In practice that means you can eat here without committing to a tasting menu or a three-hour evening, which is the right expectation to arrive with.
The half-five opening is a Miami-specific advantage
A 5:30pm start is early for a restaurant of this kind, and it is genuinely useful in a city where the light goes at seven-thirty for much of the year. An early booking means you eat while it is still light, walk afterwards while the temperature is dropping, and avoid the part of the evening when every valet queue in the Grove backs up.
The alternative — a nine o'clock table — works, but you will have spent the best two hours of the day indoors.
Main Highway and the rest of the Grove
Main Highway runs through the historic core of Coconut Grove, past the playhouse, the old village streets and down toward the bay. The Barnacle Historic State Park, a nineteenth-century house on the water, is a short walk, and the marinas and Peacock Park sit at the bottom of the hill.
This is one of the few genuinely walkable neighbourhoods in Miami, with a tree canopy that makes walking in it tolerable. Park once in the village and stay on foot.
Booking and arriving
Reservations are the sensible default for any of the dinner services, and essential on Friday and Saturday. The weekend lunch is the one where a same-week booking is realistic. If you are a party of two with no reservation, ask about the bar.
Parking in the Grove is garages and valet rather than kerbside at peak times. Arriving at half five rather than half eight solves that problem as well as the light problem.
Why the Grove stays cooler than the rest of Miami
The tree canopy is not an aesthetic detail, it is the reason the neighbourhood is usable in months when the rest of the city is not. Coconut Grove grew up around a hammock of live oaks, banyans and mahogany that was never fully cleared, and a mature canopy can hold the temperature on a street several degrees below an unshaded one a mile away. That is the difference between a fifteen-minute walk being pleasant and being a decision you regret.
It changes how to plan the visit. In July and August, an early dinner and a shaded walk down Main Highway is a realistic evening where the same plan on Ocean Drive is not. From December through March the whole neighbourhood is at its best and the outdoor tables fill from five o'clock onwards. The Grove is one of the few parts of Miami where the seasonal swing works in favour of being outside rather than against it.
The oldest neighbourhood in the city
Coconut Grove predates Miami itself — it was settled in the 1870s and 1880s, decades before the city was incorporated, by a mix of New England transplants and Bahamian labourers whose descendants built much of what is now West Grove. That history is still legible in the street grid, which wanders where the rest of Miami runs to a rectangle, and in the wooden houses that survive on the side streets off the main road.
The Barnacle, a short walk from the restaurant, is the clearest way to see it: an 1891 house on the bay, preserved with its original furnishings, on a lot that still runs down to the water through uncleared hammock. It costs a few dollars, takes under an hour, and it is the single best piece of context you can pick up before dinner. Peacock Park and the marinas below it are open ground with a bay view, and the walk between them is all downhill on the way there.
