Lunch in Silver Lake is rarely a question of what you feel like eating. It is a question of where you can sit down outside, in shade, without joining a list. The neighbourhood is built on a hillside with narrow pavements and heavy midday sun, its best rooms are small, and a large share of them do not open until the evening at all. Once you accept that the patio is the constraint, the choice becomes much easier.
Half the good rooms in Silver Lake do not open until five, and the ones that do run daytime service are the ones with the shade. Tell Karpo when you want to eat and it will strip the evening-only places out of the list.
The daytime specialist
Azizam at 2943 West Sunset Boulevard is the neighbourhood's most useful lunch address precisely because it is a daytime cafe with a patio rather than a restaurant that also does lunch. The dish it is known for is the kofteh tabrizi — a grapefruit-sized meatball built with walnuts and dried barberries, which is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to order in the middle of a Tuesday. The Persian mille-feuille afterwards is the reason people stay.
A daytime-first kitchen behaves differently from an evening kitchen doing a lunch shift: the pacing is calmer, the room is not being held back for a dinner turn, and nobody is trying to move you along. In a neighbourhood where most rooms are optimising for the seven o'clock seating, that is worth a lot at one in the afternoon.
The rooms that change character
Josephine at 4156 Santa Monica Boulevard runs a menu that changes monthly, with steak frites and triple-cooked duck fat fries as the constant. What makes it interesting is that it operates as a dark dive bar after sunset — the same address is two different places depending on when you walk in. In daylight it is a straightforward French room; later it is not, and people who have only been at one of those hours tend to describe it inaccurately.
Night + Market Song at 3322 West Sunset Boulevard is casual, serves some of the best Thai food in the city, and the order is the larb. It is one of the few rooms here that is equally good at lunch and at eleven at night, which makes it the safe answer when a group cannot agree on timing.
Counter lunch, when sitting outside is not happening
Kenbey Sushi at 4331 Sunset Boulevard does an omakase with toro and wagyu at the top end, and crowd-pleasers like spicy tuna crispy rice underneath it — the useful thing being that you can eat here at either register depending on the day. Bar Besito at 1710 Silver Lake Boulevard is built around tinned fish and tapas, including conservas served straight from the tin, such as mackerel marinated in yuzu koshu. Tinned fish is an unusually good hot-weather lunch, which is not an accident of fashion — it is cold, salty and requires no kitchen.
The gap to plan around
Silver Lake's most reliable failure mode is the mid-afternoon. Kitchens stop, dinner service has not begun, and the cafés fill with people working. If your lunch is drifting past three, the neighbourhood narrows to a handful of all-day rooms, and knowing one of them by name is worth more than knowing five excellent ones that are shut. Doto at 654 North Hoover Street runs continuously through the afternoon and into an evening of shareable izakaya plates on a hill-facing patio.
Choosing
Sitting outside, properly, at one o'clock: Azizam. A real French lunch: Josephine, while it is still daylight. Something spicy and fast that will also be right at midnight: Night + Market Song. Hot day, no appetite for anything cooked: Bar Besito. Half past three and everything has stopped: Doto. Somewhere to take a person you are trying to impress without booking a month ahead: Kenbey.

Shade on these pavements is genuinely scarce in the middle of the day, which is why the patios that have it get busy first.
