The four-hour day

A 3pm close is early even by sandwich-shop standards, and it means the shop is functionally invisible to anyone whose day does not include a midday gap. It also means the last hour is genuinely the last hour — a counter that shuts at three does not take a large order at 2.55pm with any enthusiasm.
The Monday closure is the other thing to write down. A SoMa lunch plan that assumes this place is open at the start of the week does not survive contact with the door.
Takeout only
This is a takeout operation. There is no dining room to settle into, which is the second constraint and the one that actually shapes how you use it.
In practice that pushes you outside, which in SoMa is fine. Yerba Buena Gardens is a walk away and is one of the better free public spaces in the city for eating something out of paper — lawns, a waterfall wall, and enough room to sit without negotiating for it.
On a weekend that combination is the whole plan: pick up at noon, walk to the gardens, and spend the afternoon in a part of the city that is much quieter on a Saturday than it is on a Tuesday, because SoMa empties when the offices do.
The sandwiches are built differently
The house style is to mash together two or three proteins in a single sandwich rather than picking one. That is unusual and it is deliberate — the shop's reputation is built on combinations that sound excessive on a menu and work in the hand.
There are also homemade soups and what the shop describes as out-of-the-box snacks, so the order does not have to be one enormous sandwich and nothing else. But the sandwich is the reason, and ordering the smallest thing on the board is a bit like ordering a side salad at a steakhouse.
Size your order honestly. These are large, and two people who each order a full sandwich because they are hungry at noon frequently discover at half past that they were not that hungry.
How to run a weekend around it
The best version is a late-morning start. Arrive at eleven when the shop opens, order without a queue, and take the food east into Yerba Buena or south towards the ballpark and the waterfront depending on the weather.
SoMa is not a neighbourhood people walk for pleasure during the week, which is exactly why it works at a weekend. The blocks are wide, the traffic drops off, and the museums cluster around Yerba Buena if you want an anchor for the afternoon — SFMOMA is a few minutes' walk, and the gardens themselves cost nothing.
If the fog is in, take it towards the Ferry Building instead. It is a longer walk but it runs along ground that stays interesting the whole way, and the Embarcadero is more forgiving of grey weather than an open lawn.
Ordering to avoid disappointment
Go early rather than late. A four-hour window means the counter is under sustained pressure for its entire life, and the middle of it — roughly noon to one — is when a SoMa lunch crowd that has few other good options all arrives at once.
Call ahead if you are ordering for more than two people. A takeout counter with a hard 3pm close can absorb a group order comfortably at 11.15am and much less comfortably at 2.15pm.
Bring a plan for where you are going to eat it. There is nowhere to sit, the weather in SoMa turns quickly, and a large sandwich eaten standing on Folsom Street is a worse experience than the same sandwich eaten sitting down four minutes away.
