Pasadena Pottery Painting: $15 Fee, Pieces From $18

Color Me Mine at 81 S. Fair Oaks Ave charges $15 per person, and pieces start around $18. Reserve a table for groups of 7 or more to skip the waitlist.

Color Me Mine Pasadena, at 81 S. Fair Oaks Avenue, charges a studio fee of $15 per person, and the fee applies to non-painters as well as painters. Ceramic pieces start around $18 and rise with size, so a small plate and the fee come to roughly $33 before tax. The studio keeps over 300 pieces on the shelves, seats you indoors or out, and runs until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, which makes it one of the easier evening plans in Old Pasadena.

What the $15 Fee Covers, and Who Pays It

The studio's FAQ states the pricing in one line: studio fees are $15 per person, painters and non-painters alike, and pieces start around $18 and go up with size. That non-painter detail is the one to plan around. A parent who only watches, or a friend who sits with a coffee, still pays the fee, so a family of four with two painters is looking at $60 in fees before any ceramic is chosen.

The fee buys you a seat, the paint and the studio's tools and tips. The studio says no experience is necessary and that it has lots of tricks to share, and its Visit page describes the same four moves most chain studios use: check in, choose a piece, plan your design with help from the staff, then paint. Once you finish, the team glazes and kiln-fires the piece and tells you when it is ready.

Groups of 7 or more see an 18% service fee added, and the whole group's order must be paid in a single transaction. That rule is practical rather than punitive, because the studio asks that one person handle pickup and payment for the group, but it is worth knowing before you split a bill six ways at the counter.

Reservations, Walk-Ins and the Waitlist

Pasadena is the studio in this group that leans hardest toward reserving. Its FAQ says reservations are highly recommended, while walk-ins are welcome and seated first come, first served for the tables that are open. If the room is full, the staff will add you to the waitlist and let you know as soon as a table frees up. You can reserve by calling (626) 298-6765 or by emailing pasadena.studio@colormemine.com.

The studio posts its hours on the calendar page as Sunday through Thursday, 10 am to 9 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 10 pm. For groups, the Book Your Party page lists fixed slots, which are 10 am to 12 pm, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, 3 pm to 5 pm and 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, plus an 8 pm to 9:30 pm slot on Fridays and Saturdays only. A large-group table seats 7 to 10 people on the main studio floor, with the same $15 fee per person, the price of your pieces and the 18% service charge.

If you want the quietest session, an early weekday slot is the safe choice. If you want atmosphere, the Friday and Saturday late slot is the one that keeps the studio open to 10 pm, and it lets you paint after dinner on Colorado Boulevard instead of before it.

Parties and Private Rentals

The party menu is detailed and unusually transparent. A Private Studio Event gives you the whole studio for up to 50 guests in a morning slot from 10 am to 12 pm or an evening slot from 8 to 10 pm, at $2000 plus tax, which includes up to 40 pottery items under $35 each and all studio fees. A $500 non-refundable deposit reserves it and is applied to the final bill, and an 18% service charge is added on top.

A Party Space Reservation is the mid-sized option. It gives up to 17 guests a semi-private area while other visitors paint at the front of the studio, for a $200 non-refundable rental fee plus tax, with the $15 per-person studio fee, your pieces and the 18% service charge on top. Light snacks, drinks and decorations are welcome in both formats.

For eight friends and no ceremony, the large group table is the cheaper route, and it works well for a bachelorette-sized outing that does not need its own room.

After You Paint: Pickup, Kits and Paint Rules

Orders are ready in about 7 to 10 days, according to the FAQ, and the Visit page says about a week. The studio holds finished pieces for 30 days beyond the pickup date, so a month of grace is built in. That leaves a month of grace even if your week gets away from you.

If you want to paint at home, the studio sells pieces and colors in the store and will pack up a kit for you, and its online store sells to-go kits too. There is one firm rule, which is that you can only use Color Me Mine paints. Paint from anywhere else will either burn off and leave a blank spot when the ceramic is fired or ruin the finish of your item in the kiln.

The paints themselves are non-toxic and lead-free, which is why the studio happily takes toddlers and handprint projects, and why it says anyone of any age can paint. Little ones may paint very quickly, and the staff are ready for that.

Seasonal Shelves: Gourds and Apothecary Pieces

The studio's news posts show how it uses the calendar. The fall shelf features pumpkin patch items under the banner Hello Gourd-geous, where you paint your own gourd and build up a patch, and an Apothecary Collection of potion-themed pieces made for a witch's table. Those seasonal items are the ones to look at if you are a returning painter who has already done the mugs and plates.

Because the studio always has over 300 ceramics to choose from, with new selections arriving weekly, a second visit rarely looks like the first. Seating is split between indoors and out, so you can choose a spot that suits your creative mood, which on a mild Pasadena evening usually means the patio.

Making an Afternoon of Old Pasadena

The studio sits on South Fair Oaks Avenue in the Old Pasadena district, a short walk from the shops and restaurants along Colorado Boulevard. Metro's A Line Memorial Park station is a short walk away, so you can reach the studio without a car. A sensible plan is to paint for an hour and a half, walk the Old Pasadena blocks while the table turns over for the next group, and come back to collect your finished piece in a week.

The honest caveat is that this is not a cheap hour for a family. Two painters and one non-painter pay $45 in fees alone, and an 18% service charge arrives once you reach seven people. Solo painters and pairs get the best value, and a weekday morning is the easiest time to get a table.
