Two rooms, one building
The Echo opened upstairs in 2001 as a small club holding a few hundred people. The Echoplex opened below it a few years later in a much larger basement space, roughly double the capacity, with a separate entrance around the corner on Glendale Boulevard.
Shows are booked into whichever room suits the expected draw, and both rooms can run on the same night with different acts. The tickets, the door and the entrances are separate, so the single most useful thing you can do before leaving the house is check which room you are going to.
The basement room is the better one for most purposes: bigger, better sound, a proper bar and more space to move. The upstairs room is more intimate and better for a small act you want to be close to.
What gets booked here
Indie rock, electronic, hip-hop and a long tradition of club nights, with a booking policy that has consistently favoured acts on the way up rather than legacy bookings. Both rooms have a history of hosting bands who went on to much larger venues within a year or two.

Echo Park around it
The neighbourhood has changed enormously over twenty years, from a working-class Latino district to one of the most expensive rental markets on the eastside, and the tension that produces is visible on every block of Sunset between Alvarado and Glendale.
What has not changed is the density of things to do. Echo Park Lake with its paddle boats and lotus beds is five minutes' walk, there is a long run of bars and restaurants on Sunset, and Dodger Stadium is just up the hill, which matters for traffic on game nights.
Parking is street-level and difficult on show nights, and the residential blocks are permit-restricted. Rideshare is the usual answer, and the drop-off situation on Sunset gets congested right at doors and right at closing.
Why two rooms is a good model
Most venues are stuck at one capacity, which means they either turn away shows too big for the room or lose money on shows too small for it. Running two rooms in one building lets the same booking team follow a band upward: play upstairs this year, downstairs the next, and the venue keeps the relationship either way.
For the audience, it means the building is worth checking regardless of scale. A band you missed in the small room six months ago may well be in the basement now, which is a rare continuity in a city where venues open and close constantly.
Planning around a show
Eat on Sunset before the show rather than after; the food options nearby close earlier than the venue does. Buy tickets in advance for anything with momentum, and arrive at doors if you want to be near the front, since the wide room fills across rather than back to front.
If there are shows in both rooms, check whether a single ticket gets you into both, which has been the case for some events. Ask at the door rather than assuming either way.
