The complex opened in 1994 on a site that once housed the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad station, later a celery-packing plant and water-heater factory. Today twenty-plus galleries occupy the repurposed buildings, all free to enter, Tuesday through Saturday from eleven to five.

The Michigan Avenue Block
Bergamot Station occupies the west side of Michigan Avenue between Olympic Boulevard to the north and Stewart Street to the south. The 26th Street/Bergamot stop on the Metro Expo E Line sits immediately adjacent, elevated tracks running parallel to the property. From the platform you step directly onto the campus. If you drive west on Interstate 10, exit at Cloverfield Boulevard and turn south; from the east, take the 20th Street exit. Free parking fills the main lot during property-wide events, and overflow spaces open at Kite Pharma with an entrance on Stewart Street.
Le Great Outdoor occupies Suite A3 in the A-Building on the east edge of the property. The restaurant serves Tuesday through Saturday from ten in the morning until ten at night, Sunday until nine, closed Monday. Wheelchair access covers all galleries and businesses on site. Dogs are welcome if leashed.
What Sits Within Ten Minutes
Walk north on Michigan Avenue for five minutes and you reach Olympic Boulevard, where restaurants and coffee shops cluster between 26th Street and Cloverfield. Heading east on Olympic takes you toward the denser Santa Monica grid. South on Stewart Street leads to residential blocks and the edge of the Cloverfield industrial zone. The neighborhood mixes light manufacturing, creative offices, and low-rise apartments.
Cloverfield Boulevard runs north-south one block east of Michigan. Within a ten-minute walk you find grocery stores, bakeries, and lunch counters serving the weekday office crowd. The Expo Line continues east toward downtown Los Angeles and west to the coast, making Bergamot a midpoint stop for riders connecting between beach neighborhoods and the urban core.
How Galleries Operate
General gallery hours run Tuesday through Saturday, eleven to five, though individual spaces vary. Some galleries operate by appointment; The Audio Salon & Gallery in Suite F1 is one example. No admission fee applies to any gallery. Walk in, move between buildings, and leave when you finish. Most spaces close Sunday and Monday.
Property-wide events fill the parking lot early. Rideshare or Metro is the reliable choice on those days. Standard weekend visits rarely hit capacity. The campus layout spreads galleries across multiple low-slung buildings connected by outdoor walkways, so plan for sun exposure or rain depending on the season.
The Railroad and Factory Past
The site served as a railroad station from 1875 to 1953 for the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad, later absorbed by the Santa Monica Air Line. After passenger service ended, the buildings housed a celery-packing operation, an ice-making plant, and a water-heater factory. The City of Santa Monica purchased the property and reopened it as an arts campus on September 17, 1994. Rising Realty Partners manages the property as of 2024, with city-owned spaces overseen by the City of Santa Monica.
The industrial bones remain visible in the wide loading-dock doors, high ceilings, and concrete floors now painted white to accommodate contemporary art. The transformation from freight depot to gallery district preserved the utilitarian scale, giving each exhibition room the volume to display large canvases and installations without crowding.
