When you search events near me today in Los Angeles at four in the afternoon, most of what comes back is already sold out or starts in twelve minutes across town. The Comedy Store at 8433 Sunset Boulevard is the rare venue built for exactly that search. It runs three rooms nightly from 6:30pm to 2am, the lineups are posted late, drop-in sets from names far bigger than the ticket price are routine, and the last shows of the night are deliberately cheaper than the early ones.

Three rooms, three different nights

The building holds three separate venues and choosing between them is the whole decision. The Main Room seats about 450 and is where announced headliners play — it feels like a theater, the tickets cost the most, and it is the least likely to produce a surprise. The Original Room is the middle: a dark, low-ceilinged space that runs as many as a dozen comics in a night, fifteen minutes each, which is where the drop-ins land. The Belly Room upstairs holds around 100 and is where newer comics and odd, specific shows live; on a good night it is the best room in the building, and on a bad night you are twelve feet from someone learning in public.

The place has been doing this since April 1972, when comedian Sammy Shore opened it with his wife Mitzi and the writer Rudy DeLuca. Mitzi Shore took over running it in 1973, bought the building in 1976 and expanded it, adding the 450-seat Main Room. The building itself is older and stranger than the club: it opened as Club Seville in 1935, then spent 1940 to 1957 as Ciro's, the Sunset Strip nightclub, and later turned into a rock venue where the Byrds were discovered in 1964. The walls are painted black with comics' names on them now, but the bones are a nightclub.

The door: ID, Yondr pouch, two-item minimum

Three rules decide whether your night works, and all three are enforced. First, the Store is 21 and over for every show, with no exceptions — bring physical ID even if you look forty. Second, since December 10, 2024, phones, smart watches, smart glasses and recording devices go into locked Yondr cases at the door and are unlocked when the show ends. You keep your device; you just cannot use it. If you are meeting someone inside, agree on where you are sitting before you walk in, because you will not be texting them.

Third, there is a two-item minimum per person — per person, not per table. Non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, tea and food all count toward it, so this is not a drinking requirement, but it is a real cost on top of the ticket and it is not optional. Buy tickets only through the club's official channels; third-party tickets are never accepted, which matters because Sunset Strip resale listings are everywhere. And do not be late: seats are not held past showtime, and a late arrival can lose a reservation outright.

Why the late show is the value play

The club discounts the last shows of the night. Late-night pricing kicks in after 10:30pm on Sundays, after 11:30pm on weeknights, and after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays — mostly in the Original Room, where the lineup is longest. Those slots are also, structurally, when working comics who have finished sets elsewhere in the city come by to try material. You are paying less for the show with the higher chance of a surprise, which is an inversion of how nearly every other venue in Los Angeles prices itself.

The counterintuitive part is the walk-up. Weekend early shows sell out in advance; the late Original Room show frequently does not, and the box office keeps releasing seats as the night reshuffles. If you decided to go out at 10pm on a Tuesday, this is a genuinely available plan. Monday's Potluck is the other entry point — an open-mic-style night where anyone can end up on stage, which is either the charm or the warning, depending on your tolerance.

The Strip around it

The Store sits at the eastern end of the Sunset Strip's music stretch, which makes the pre-show hour easy to fill on foot. Book Soup, the independent bookstore at 8818 Sunset, stays open late and is a five-minute walk west. Past it are the Whisky a Go Go at 8901, the Roxy at 9009, and the Rainbow Bar & Grill at 9015 — the block where LA's rock history is stacked three doors deep. Walking east instead puts you at the Andaz at 8401, the hotel still known as the Riot House.

Parking is the real constraint. There is no on-site public lot, the Strip's garages and surface lots are expensive, and the posted street-parking rules are enforced aggressively enough that a ticket can cost more than your night out. Rideshare is the default, and the practical move is to be dropped off on Sunset itself rather than on the residential streets above, where the turnaround at 1am is slow.
