How after-hours works legally
The rule in California is that alcohol cannot be served between two and six in the morning. It says nothing about a venue being open or music being played. Venues that run after-hours therefore stop serving, clear the bars, and continue as an alcohol-free event until dawn.
In practice that means one of two formats. Either the night runs continuously and the bars simply close at two, or the venue clears and reopens for a separately ticketed after-hours session. Check which applies to your night, because a re-entry policy that does not exist has ended a lot of evenings prematurely.
A dry dance floor at four in the morning is a genuinely different experience from a wet one at midnight. The crowd that stays is the crowd that came for the music, and the energy is more focused and considerably less messy.
The building
It opened in 1927 as a legitimate theatre and has been through several identities since, including a long period as a well-known music venue under a different name in the 1960s where a great many significant acts played. The bones are still theatrical: a proscenium, a balcony, a raked relationship between the floor and the stage.
That architecture is why it sounds and looks unlike a purpose-built club. A balcony gives you somewhere to stand and watch the floor from above, the ceiling height keeps the room from feeling compressed, and the stage is a real stage rather than a platform.

What gets booked
House and techno dominate the late nights, with international touring DJs, plus trance, bass and open-format events depending on the promoter. It is a room where a headline set can run for hours rather than the ninety-minute slot typical of a festival booking, and long sets are the reason to be there.
A long set is a different musical form. A DJ with four hours can build slowly, take the room somewhere unexpected in the middle and bring it back, which is impossible in ninety minutes with a hard changeover. If you have only ever seen DJs at festivals, an extended set in a dark room is the version worth experiencing.
Pacing a night that ends at dawn
The single most common mistake is treating it like a normal night out. If you arrive at ten and drink at a normal rate, you will not be functional at four. The people who do this regularly arrive late, drink moderately before last call, and switch to water.
Eat properly beforehand. Nothing will be available inside after two, and the food options around Hollywood at that hour are limited and not good. Sleep in the afternoon if you can.
Plan the journey home in advance. Trains are not running, surge pricing at six in the morning is real but less severe than at two, and Hollywood is one of the easier parts of the city to get a car from. Do not plan to drive yourself home after a night of any kind.
The door
Twenty-one and over, identification checked properly, and a dress code that varies by promoter but is generally more relaxed for the techno nights than for the open-format ones. Advance tickets are cheaper and the larger names sell out.

Hollywood around it
Hollywood and Vine is at the centre of the tourist district, which means the surrounding blocks are busy, well lit and heavily policed at night, and also that the pavement is crowded with people who are not going anywhere in particular. The Metro B Line station is directly at the intersection, which matters before the trains stop.
Several other venues are within walking distance, so a night can start elsewhere and finish here, which is the usual pattern for an after-hours event. Parking structures nearby are open late and charge accordingly.
