KYU Wynwood Review: What the Wood Fire Actually Changes

A whole head of roasted cauliflower, charred at the florets, dressed with crumbled white cheese and a green herb vinaigrette in a shallow bowl

KYU is the restaurant most responsible for what Wynwood dining looks like now, and the dish it is best known for is a head of cauliflower. That is a useful place to start, because it tells you the kitchen is not organised the way the price bracket suggests. This is an Asian-influenced wood-fire restaurant where the vegetables are not the compromise order.

Wynwood turns over fast and the block around KYU is a different place at seven than it is at eleven. Ask Karpo what is bookable tonight, whether the happy hour window is still running, and what to line up afterwards within walking distance.

Plan the Wynwood evening

The cauliflower is the correct first order

Roasted whole over wood, served with goat cheese and a shishito-herb vinaigrette, it appears at $12 on the happy hour menu and is the single most ordered thing in the building. The wood does something to a cauliflower that an oven cannot: the outer florets go past brown into genuine char while the interior stays dense and sweet, and the goat cheese and the vinaigrette are there to cut it rather than to dress it up.

It is also a good diagnostic. If you like what the fire has done to the cauliflower, you will like the rest of the menu, because everything here is built on the same principle. If the char reads as burnt to you, order differently — this kitchen leans hard into smoke and does not soften it.

Where the rest of the money goes

The other pillars are the Korean fried chicken, the crispy rice and the sesame-crusted short ribs. The short ribs are the expensive centrepiece and they are very good, but they are also the dish that pushes a table past its intended budget faster than anything else on the page. The fried chicken is the better value and, for a lot of tables, the better dish — it is fried, then finished over the fire, which gives it a smoke note that a purely fried version never has.

The pricing needs saying clearly: this is comfortably north of $100 a head once you have drinks, and it does not feel like it while you are ordering. The menu is structured as small and medium plates, which is the format most likely to produce a bill nobody expected. Four plates and two cocktails for two people is the point at which the arithmetic turns.

The way to control it is to order the cauliflower, the fried chicken, one rice or noodle dish and one more thing, and to stop. That is a full meal for two and it lands well under the headline number. Adding the short rib is a decision, not a default.

The two-year gap matters

The Wynwood flagship closed in November 2022 after storm-related structural damage and did not reopen until March 2024. That is a long time for a restaurant of this profile to be dark, and it is worth knowing because a lot of the writing about KYU online predates the closure and describes a room that no longer exists in that form.

The reopened space is a refresh rather than a reinvention — the wood-fire kitchen is still the centre of it and the menu carried through — but the room reads differently, and the neighbourhood around it changed considerably during those seventeen months. Reviews from 2019 through 2022 should be treated as historical.

Timing and the happy hour

Happy hour is the genuinely useful mechanism here, and it is where the $12 cauliflower price comes from. It is the only way to eat this food at a moderate cost, and because the bar area takes the overflow, it is also the easiest way in without a reservation. If you are curious about the kitchen but not committed to a $250 dinner, that is the entry point.

For dinner proper, book through Resy or OpenTable. Weekends fill and the room is not large. Wynwood parking is its own problem — the surface lots fill by eight on a Saturday and the rates are opportunistic, so this is a rideshare neighbourhood rather than a driving one.

The last thing worth knowing is what surrounds it. Wynwood is dense with bars and galleries within a few blocks, and the district's rhythm means that dinner at seven and dinner at ten put you into two different neighbourhoods on the way out. Decide which one you want before you book the table.

What the room is doing

The dining room is built around the open kitchen and the fire, with concrete, steel and reclaimed wood doing the rest. It is loud by design and it stays loud, which makes it a poor choice for a conversation that matters and a good one for a group that wants the evening to have momentum.

That noise level is the clearest signal of what KYU is: a restaurant that arrived when Wynwood was still turning from warehouse district into destination, and that took the neighbourhood's energy as its brief rather than resisting it. Nothing about the room apologises for being in a former industrial block.

It also means the two-top experience and the six-top experience diverge sharply. Six people sharing a table of wood-fired plates is exactly what this menu was designed for. Two people at a small table on a Saturday night are working against the acoustics for the whole meal, which is another argument for going at happy hour or early in the week.

Practical notes

251 NW 25th Street in Wynwood; rideshare rather than drive, because lots fill early on weekends and price accordingly. Reservations through Resy or OpenTable and worth making for any weekend evening. Expect over $100 a head with drinks at dinner; happy hour is materially cheaper and the roasted cauliflower appears there around $12. Order the cauliflower and the Korean fried chicken first; the sesame-crusted short rib is excellent and is what moves the bill. The flagship was closed from November 2022 to March 2024, so older reviews describe a different room.

Ask Karpo first

Wynwood changes character by the hour and KYU sits in the middle of it, so the plan around dinner matters as much as the booking. Ask Karpo what is available tonight, whether the happy hour window is still open, and which bars and galleries within a few blocks are worth building the rest of the evening around.
