Two things about Joe's Stone Crab reliably ruin people's plans, and both are fixable if you know them in advance. The dining room at 11 Washington Avenue takes no reservations at all, so the wait is whatever the wait is. And Florida stone crab season has hard dates, which means the thing you came for is a calendar question rather than a menu question.
Karpo can tell you how long the Joe's dining room wait is running tonight and whether the takeaway counter next door is the faster way to eat the same claws.
The season runs mid-October to the first of May
Florida's stone crab season opens on the fifteenth of October and closes on the first of May. That is a regulatory date rather than a restaurant policy, and it governs when the claws are being landed fresh. Turning up in July expecting peak stone crab is a misunderstanding of what stone crab is, not a failure of the restaurant.
The useful nuance is that claws are available year-round in practice, because the operation holds and sources beyond the immediate season. So a summer visit is not a wasted one. But if the specific experience you are after is stone crab at its best in the room that made it famous, you want to be here between mid-October and the end of April.
No reservations means the wait is the system
The dining room is first-come, first-served, full stop. There is no list you can join in advance, no concierge shortcut that reliably works, and no way to convert money into an earlier table. On a Saturday in season the wait can stretch a long way, and people underestimate it consistently because the building looks large from outside.

The counter-strategy is the same as everywhere that runs this system: go at the edges. Lunch service runs Wednesday through Sunday from half past eleven to half past two, and arriving at opening is a completely different experience from arriving at one o'clock. For dinner, the first seating of the evening is materially easier than eight o'clock.
Joe's Take Away is the answer most people miss
There is a separate takeaway operation, and it is the single most useful piece of information about this restaurant. Joe's Take Away runs all year round, every day, from half past eleven in the morning until nine at night, on its own phone line. You order, you collect, and there is no dining-room wait involved at all.
This solves a real problem. If what you want is the claws with mustard sauce and the sides, rather than the ceremony of the dining room, takeaway gets you there in a fraction of the time. Eaten on a balcony, at a rented table or in a park, it is the same food. The dining room is a distinct experience worth having once, but it is not the only way to eat here.
Service hours, which are narrower than you would guess
Lunch is Wednesday through Sunday, half eleven to half two. Dinner runs Sunday through Thursday from five to ten, and Friday and Saturday from five to eleven. Note what that means: there is no lunch on Monday or Tuesday, and there is a genuine gap in the afternoon when the dining room is not serving at all.
A three o'clock arrival is the most common way to find the doors effectively shut in the middle of a sunny afternoon. If you are building a South Beach day around this, put it at the start of the afternoon or the start of the evening, not between them, and check the day of the week before you commit.
What to order beyond the claws
The claws come chilled, cracked, with a mustard sauce that is genuinely part of the dish rather than a garnish, and they are sold by size grade. The larger grades cost considerably more and the difference is real but not proportional to the price jump, so a medium order is not a compromise — it is often the sensible choice for a first visit.
Around them, the restaurant runs a full menu that people routinely ignore and should not. The sides in particular are old-school American in a way that has become rare, and the fried chicken has a quiet reputation among regulars as the thing to order when the season has closed. If you are here in summer, that is the dish that makes the visit worthwhile on its own terms.
Where it sits, and how to arrive
Eleven Washington Avenue is at the far southern end of South Beach, in South of Fifth, which is a quieter and more residential part of the beach than the Ocean Drive strip further north. It is a walkable distance from South Pointe Park, and the surrounding blocks are pleasant to kill twenty minutes in while you wait.
Parking down here is limited and the surrounding streets fill up in season. A rideshare drop-off is the low-friction option, and if you are staying anywhere between Fifth Street and Lincoln Road, the walk down Washington Avenue is straightforward and takes less time than finding a space.
