It is also open until three in the morning most nights and four at the weekend, which is why a substantial fraction of its business happens when nobody is thinking clearly.

The plain slice is the benchmark, deliberately
A plain cheese slice costs four dollars. Pepperoni and the specialty slices are five. Those numbers matter because the plain slice is the thing being tested — there is nothing on it to hide behind, and a counter that gets the plain slice right is doing the fundamentals correctly.
What you are looking for is a base that holds when you fold it, a char pattern on the underside from the deck, sauce that tastes of tomato rather than sugar, and cheese that has browned in patches rather than uniformly. Order plain first. If you like it, order something else next time; if you do not, nothing else on the board will fix it.
The hours, and what they are for
Monday through Thursday and Sunday, the counter runs from ten in the morning until three the following morning. Friday and Saturday it goes until four. That schedule is not accidental — it maps precisely onto the Village's nightlife, and the last two hours of it are among the busiest of the day.
The consequence is that the queue at half past two on a Saturday is longer than the queue at half past two on a Tuesday afternoon, and the slices are coming out faster and fresher at the busy hour because the turnover is higher. Counter-intuitively, the middle of the night is frequently when the pizza is at its best here.
Reheated versus fresh, and how to get the good one
A slice counter holds finished pies and reheats slices to order. That is the model and there is nothing wrong with it, but there is a meaningful difference between a slice cut from a pie that came out four minutes ago and one that has been sitting for twenty and gets a hard reheat.
Look at the trays before you order. If a fresh pie has just landed, order from it. If everything looks like it has been there a while, it is entirely acceptable to ask for a fresh one and wait a few minutes. Nobody at this counter will be surprised by the question.
There is no seating worth planning around
There are a handful of stools and a ledge and that is it. This is a stand-up-and-eat or walk-and-eat operation, which is the correct format for a New York slice and a genuine problem if it is raining. Fold the slice lengthways, which is not a stylistic choice but a structural one — an eighteen-inch pie cut into eight will not survive being held flat.
The upside of the format is speed. Two people can be in and out in four minutes at an off hour, which makes this a genuinely viable stop between other things rather than an event. That is what a slice place is for.
Two counters, and which one you actually want
There is a second Joe's at 1435 Broadway in Times Square, and its hours run even later — to three in the morning most nights, four on Thursday and five on Friday and Saturday. If you are coming out of a Broadway show or leaving a bar in Midtown, that is the one you want, not a subway ride to the Village.
The Carmine Street counter is the original and it sits in a considerably more pleasant neighbourhood to be standing on the pavement in. If the pizza is the point, either works. If the evening is the point, Carmine Street wins easily — you are two minutes from Bleecker and a short walk from Washington Square.
Getting there
Carmine Street runs between Bleecker and Sixth Avenue in the West Village. The West Fourth Street station on the A, B, C, D, E, F and M lines is a short walk north, and the Houston Street stop on the 1 is a similar distance south. Both are easy at any hour the counter is open.

Why it still matters
New York has more ambitious pizza than this, and some of it is genuinely better as pizza. What Joe's has is consistency across five decades at a price that has stayed accessible, in a format that requires no planning and no reservation, at hours when nothing else is available.
That combination is rarer than excellence. A four-dollar slice you can get at half past three in the morning, that is the same slice it was in 1985, is a piece of civic infrastructure. Treat it as the baseline rather than the ceiling and it will never disappoint you.
