Atwater Village is one of the few Los Angeles neighbourhoods where the phrase food near me has a genuinely simple answer, because almost all of it sits on one stretch of Glendale Boulevard, and that stretch is short enough to walk end to end without thinking about it. In a city organised around driving between individual destinations, a neighbourhood you can park in once and then forget the car is a meaningful thing.
Everything worth eating here is inside a few walkable blocks, but the hours vary a lot between the bakery, the taco counter and the beer bar. Tell Karpo when you are going and it will sequence the street.
The taco counter
Tacos Villa Corona is a cramped little spot on Glendale Boulevard doing no-fuss tacos, chilaquiles and breakfast burritos, and it is the address the neighbourhood is genuinely known for. Cramped is accurate — this is a counter operation rather than a room, and the queue at weekend mornings is the local landmark.
The breakfast burrito is the order that has built the reputation. It is worth arriving with the expectation of eating it standing up or taking it away, because that is how the place is designed to work rather than an inconvenience.
The bakery
Proof Bakery at 3156 Glendale Boulevard is the neighbourhood's serious morning address, and it does the thing a good neighbourhood bakery is supposed to do — becomes the place where the same people show up at the same hour every day. Black Elephant Coffee at 3195 Glendale Boulevard covers the other half of that, with gluten-free and vegan pastries alongside the coffee, which between the two of them means the street has a genuine morning economy rather than one option.
Later in the day
Holy Basil runs a tiny sit-down Thai room just off Glendale Boulevard, with dishes specific to this location including a wild shrimp agua chile and a seared beef tataki — which is not what most people expect from a Thai menu and is the reason to come here rather than to the branch nearest wherever you live.
Link n Hops at 3111 Glendale Boulevard is a sausage and beer gastropub, which is a straightforward and slightly old-fashioned proposition and works exactly as advertised. It is the natural evening anchor on this street — somewhere a group can sit for two hours without anyone having to have researched anything.
The ending
Wanderlust Creamery at 3134 Glendale Boulevard makes ice cream with flavours themed around geography — the whole conceit is places rendered as flavours — and it sits within a couple of hundred metres of everything else on this list. An ice cream shop within walking distance of the dinner is a structural advantage that most Los Angeles neighbourhoods simply do not have.
Around the edges
Two nearby addresses are worth knowing even though they are not on the strip. The Morrison on Los Feliz Boulevard is a bar and restaurant with a large dining room, an outdoor patio and a strong craft beer list, which makes it the answer for a bigger group. Tam O'Shanter is the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles run by the same family in the same location, going for more than ninety years, doing prime rib and shepherd's pie. Neither is Atwater exactly, and both are a very short drive.
How to do the street
Morning: Proof or Black Elephant, then Tacos Villa Corona if you want the burrito and are prepared to queue. Afternoon: walk it, because it is short and pleasant and the shops between the restaurants are half the point. Evening: Holy Basil for a proper meal or Link n Hops for a longer, looser one, then Wanderlust on the way back to the car. That is a full day inside about half a mile, which in this city is close to unheard of.
