The Hollywood Bowl is the only major amphitheatre in the country where turning up with a cool box, a blanket and a bottle of wine is not merely tolerated but is the expected behaviour. For a large proportion of the summer season you can bring your own food and your own alcohol into a seventeen-thousand-seat venue and eat it in your seat while an orchestra plays. The critical qualification, which catches people out every season, is that this does not apply to every event on the calendar.

Which nights allow it
The distinction is who is presenting the performance. Nights programmed by the orchestra that calls the Bowl its summer home generally permit food and alcohol brought from outside. Nights rented to an outside promoter — many of the pop and touring shows — generally do not.
This is not advertised prominently and it is not intuitive from the ticket. The practical instruction is to check the policy for your specific date rather than generalising from a friend's experience at a different show.
Getting it wrong means either surrendering your bag at the gate or making an unplanned trip back to a car parked some distance away. Both are avoidable with one check before leaving the house.
How to picnic properly
The cheaper bench seating is exactly that — a bench, shared, with limited space in front of you. An elaborate picnic works far better in the boxes, which have tables, than in the benches, which do not.
For bench seats the sensible approach is food that requires no assembly and no cutting: things already in portions, a cool box that fits under the bench, and as little glassware as you can manage. Ambition is punished by the geometry.
There are also on-site catering options and pre-order services for those who would rather not carry anything up the hill, which is a real consideration given the walk from most parking to most seats.
The picnic itself has become part of the institution rather than a workaround, and the grounds open well before the performance specifically so people can use them. Arriving an hour or more early and eating on the terraces before going to your seat is the way regulars do it, and it converts a concert into a whole evening. It also means the approach roads are busiest much earlier than the start time would suggest.
Stacked parking is a trap
On-site parking is largely stacked, meaning cars are parked bumper to bumper in lanes and you cannot leave until the vehicles in front of you have gone. If you have a commitment afterwards, this is a serious constraint rather than a minor one.
It also means the exit after a sold-out night takes a long time regardless of how quickly you get to your car. Leaving early to beat the traffic does not work if you are boxed in by people who stayed for the encore.
The alternative is the park-and-ride shuttle network, which runs from a number of locations around the city and drops directly at the venue. It is the recommended option for good reason and it removes the entire stacked-parking problem.
It gets cold, genuinely
The Bowl sits in a canyon, the season runs through the evening, and Los Angeles loses heat fast once the sun goes. A ninety-degree afternoon routinely becomes a genuinely chilly night by the second half of a concert.
This is the single most common complaint from first-timers and it is entirely preventable. A jacket and, for the cheaper open seating, something to sit on and something to put over your knees, are standard equipment rather than excessive.
Regulars bring a blanket as a matter of course. It doubles as padding on a wooden bench, which after two hours is a benefit in its own right.
Where to sit, and what the season is
The venue is enormous and the cheap seats are a long way back and high up. For orchestral programmes this matters less than you would think, because the sound is amplified and distributed for the whole bowl rather than projected from the stage.
For anything visual — a film with live score, a pop act, anything where you want to see faces — the distance is real and the screens do the work. Judging the seat against what you are actually going for is the sensible approach.
The season is summer only, running roughly from early summer to the beginning of autumn. Outside those months the venue is closed for performance, which surprises visitors who assume a Los Angeles venue operates year-round.
Programming across a season is broader than the orchestra's name suggests. Alongside the classical repertoire there are film scores played live to picture, jazz nights, world music, fireworks programmes and touring pop acts, which is why the food and alcohol rules vary in the first place. Reading the season as one venue with one policy is the error; it is closer to several different operations sharing a hillside.
