The Venues Where Tonight Is Actually Possible

One more mid-sized option worth holding in reserve: repertory and single-screen cinemas. A programmed film has a fixed start time, a known running length and almost always has seats on the day, which makes it the most predictable ticketed evening available at short notice in this city. It is also the only category on this list where arriving ten minutes late does not ruin the plan.
The Fallback That Always Works
When nothing lands, the reliable Los Angeles fallback is the coast at sunset. Every beach in California is free and public, sunset is a fixed and non-negotiable start time, and the drive west after seven runs against the traffic rather than with it. Dockweiler has fire pits on a first-come, first-served basis, which is one of very few legal beach fires in the county and turns a non-plan into an actual evening for the price of firewood.
The reason to keep this in reserve rather than reaching for it first is that it works better as a decision than as a default. A deliberate drive to the coast at half past six is a good night. The same drive taken at eight because everything else failed is just a long dark car journey.
