Late September: Folsom Street Fair
Folsom Street Fair takes over a stretch of SoMa on Sunday 27 September 2026, running from eleven in the morning until six in the evening. It is the largest event of its kind anywhere and it is unmistakably a San Francisco institution, with a donation-based entry model that funds a long list of local non-profits.
The practical planning notes are about the neighbourhood rather than the fair. SoMa closes down substantially, the surrounding streets become impassable, and driving anywhere near it on that Sunday is a decision you will regret. BART and Muni are the only sensible approach, and the stations closest to the fair are heavily congested from mid-morning — getting off one stop early and walking in is faster than it sounds.
Early October: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass runs 2 to 4 October 2026 in Golden Gate Park, free, for its twenty-sixth year. No tickets, no wristbands, no paid tier — the festival was endowed to stay free and never has charged. The 2026 lineup includes Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, My Morning Jacket, Old Crow Medicine Show, Hiss Golden Messenger, Kathleen Edwards and AJ Lee & Blue Summit, and the weekend opens with a benefit concert honouring Steve Earle, who has played every year since 2002.
Pick one stage and stay at it. Moving between stages across that much park costs twenty to thirty minutes each way through crowds, and the people who try to see six acts end up seeing two and walking for four hours. Public transport in, layers for a fifteen-degree evening drop, and arrive earlier than you think for usable ground.
The second week of October: Fleet Week
Fleet Week San Francisco runs 4 to 12 October 2026, with the air show over three consecutive days — Friday 9, Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, roughly ten in the morning to four in the afternoon each day. The Blue Angels are back this year after the 2025 government shutdown grounded them, which makes this the most anticipated edition in several years.
The viewing geography is the entire point. The show runs over the bay in front of the northern waterfront, which means Marina Green, Fort Mason, Crissy Field, Aquatic Park and the higher ground on Telegraph Hill and Russian Hill all work. The crowds concentrate on the Marina Green; the higher vantage points are less crowded and give you the whole flight path rather than one pass. Sound arrives late — you see the aircraft before you hear them, which is disconcerting the first time and then becomes the best part.
How to sequence four weeks
Treat these as four separate weekends rather than a season and plan the transport first in every case, because all four generate road closures or crowd loads that make driving a mistake. If you can only do two, take Hardly Strictly for the music and the Fleet Week air show for the spectacle — they are the two that are free, outdoors and genuinely unlike anything else on the American calendar. And book any restaurant you want on those weekends well in advance, because the northern waterfront during Fleet Week and the Inner Sunset during Hardly Strictly both run at a capacity their normal weekends never see.
The weekends either side
The four fixtures are not the whole autumn. Litquake, the city's literary festival, runs through October with readings scattered across bars, bookshops and small venues, most of them free or close to it. Dia de los Muertos in the Mission at the start of November closes the season with a procession that has been running for decades and is a community event rather than a spectacle for visitors. And the Castro Street Fair in early October and the neighbourhood street fairs through September and October fill most of the remaining weekends. If your four weeks are already committed, these are the ones to move into November.
