The Last Weeks of the Bowl Season
The Hollywood Bowl's 2026 season opened on Saturday 20 June and runs through September, which makes right now the closing stretch rather than the opening one. Smooth Summer Jazz was on Sunday 30 August and Movie Night falls on Sunday 6 September — the two set-piece evenings the season is built around, both at the end of the calendar rather than the beginning.
The reason to prioritise a Bowl night in September specifically is weather and light. The venue is an outdoor amphitheatre in the hills; June evenings there are frequently grey and cool, September evenings are the ones people remember. If you have been meaning to go all summer, this is the part of the season where the venue is at its best, and there is no equivalent in October because the season has ended.
A First-Year Festival That Costs Nothing
The single most interesting date this month is the inaugural Los Angeles Korean Film Festival, running 24 to 26 September at the Harmony Gold Preview House and the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles. It is presented by the Korean Cultural Center, it programmes nineteen Korean independent, art and short films, and a large number of them are North American premieres.
Every screening and programme is free and open to the public. That combination — first edition, free entry, premieres — is unusual enough to be worth planning around, and first-year festivals have a specific quality that later editions lose: the audience is small, the filmmakers are actually present, and nothing has yet been optimised.

The Griffith Park Room Keeps Going
The Greek Theatre in Griffith Park programmes later into the autumn than the Bowl does, and its September calendar includes Lily Allen on Monday 21 September among a wide spread across genres. A Monday show at the Greek is a specific and underrated pleasure: the park is quiet, the parking situation is dramatically better than a Saturday, and the hill walk down afterwards is genuinely pleasant rather than a scrum.
Weeknight shows at this venue are the ones locals take. If you have only ever been on a Friday or Saturday and found the exit unbearable, try a Monday or Tuesday before writing the place off.
The Free Weekly Fixtures Nobody Books
Two recurring free events are worth putting into a normal week rather than treating as special occasions. Grand Park runs Lunchtime Concerts on Wednesdays at 12:30pm, free, in the middle of downtown — which turns an ordinary working Wednesday into something else entirely for the price of walking outside. And Jazz at LACMA remains one of the city's best free live-music offerings, with plaza seating on a first-come, first-served basis.
Neither of these requires a ticket, a plan or a companion. That is precisely why they get overlooked: things you cannot book do not appear in a calendar, so they never compete with the things you can. The fix is to schedule them as if they were ticketed.
How to Choose
If you can only do one thing this month, make it a Bowl night — the season ends and does not come back until June. If you want the most interesting thing rather than the most reliable, take a day of the Korean Film Festival, because a first edition only happens once. If you want the best value, put a Wednesday lunchtime in Grand Park into your week and stop treating free events as lesser events.
The one structural warning: several of this month's best options are unticketed, and unticketed means the constraint is arrival time rather than availability. For anything free in Los Angeles, the queue is the ticket, and being thirty minutes early is the whole strategy.
