West Adams is one of the oldest parts of Los Angeles, laid out around the turn of the twentieth century and still full of Craftsman and Victorian houses that predate almost everything on the Westside. For most of the last fifty years it had very little in the way of restaurants. That changed quickly and recently, and the result is a strip that looks nothing like a planned restaurant district: individual rooms spaced along Adams Boulevard and Jefferson Boulevard, most of them in buildings that were something else first.
The good addresses here are minutes apart by car and awkwardly far on foot, so the order you do them in decides the evening. Tell Karpo where you are coming in from and it will sequence it.
The anchor
Alta Adams at 5359 W Adams Boulevard is the restaurant most often named when people talk about this neighbourhood — Californian cooking through a Southern lens, in a room with a patio that does a great deal of work on a warm evening. It functions as the neighbourhood's living room, which means it is busy at the times you would expect and calm at the times you would not.
Book it if you want a table at eight on a Saturday. If you did not, the earlier end of the evening and the bar are both genuinely usable, and the patio turns over faster than the dining room does.
The rest of the strip
Mizlala on Adams covers Israeli and Middle Eastern plates and is the neighbourhood's most reliable large-group option. Johnny's West Adams, in the old Johnny's Pastrami building, has become a bar-and-restaurant hybrid that runs later than most of the street. Highly Likely on Jefferson is the daytime room — an all-day café that does breakfast properly and stops before dinner. Delicious Pizza brings a hip-hop-rooted pizza operation to the same stretch, and it is a different crowd again.
The spacing is the thing to plan for. These are not neighbours; they are addresses on two long boulevards. Walking between two of them is possible but rarely pleasant, and the blocks in between are residential rather than commercial.
What is around the food
The West Adams Historic District is the reason to arrive in daylight. The streets north and south of Adams Boulevard hold some of the best-preserved pre-1920s housing in the city, and driving or walking a few of them before dinner turns a meal into an evening. The Guasti Villa and the mansions along Adams near the university edge are the showpieces. Nearby, the Ray Charles Memorial Library on Washington marks the studio where he worked for decades.
Getting there
West Adams sits just south of the 10 freeway, which makes it quick from downtown, Culver City and the Westside alike, and confusing if you try to cross the freeway on foot. Metro's E Line runs along Exposition to the north, with the Farmdale and La Cienega stations within reach of the neighbourhood's eastern and western ends respectively. Street parking is generally available, which is a real advantage over almost every other new restaurant strip in Los Angeles.
Choosing
One good dinner, booked: Alta Adams. A group of six with mixed diets: Mizlala. A late drink attached to actual food: Johnny's. Breakfast or a working morning: Highly Likely on Jefferson. Pizza with a soundtrack: Delicious Pizza. An afternoon before any of it: drive the historic blocks north of Adams.
