The vegan era is over
In 2021 the restaurant reopened with an entirely plant-based menu, which was a genuine and much-argued-about departure for a room of that standing. That is no longer the whole story. Guests can now choose a fully plant-based experience or a hybrid menu that brings selected animal proteins back into certain courses.
In practice that means dishes like honey-lavender glazed duck, scallops and lobster have returned as options rather than as the default. If you were put off by the vegan-only years, the objection no longer applies; if you came specifically for the plant-based cooking, it is still there and still the house's clearest point of view.
What it actually costs
The full tasting menu runs three hundred and eighty-five dollars per person for seven to eight courses. The bar tasting menu is two hundred and twenty-five per person for four to five courses. Wine pairings start around a hundred and twenty-five a head on top of either.
Do the arithmetic before you book rather than after. Two people on the full menu with pairings, before tax and before anything else, is past a thousand dollars. That is the number to have in mind — the headline price is per person and the pairing is per person, and the total arrives faster than people expect.
The bar is the answer for most people
The lounge menu at two twenty-five is not a consolation prize. It is four to five courses in the same building, from the same kitchen, in a room that is considerably less formal and where the whole evening runs shorter. For a first visit it is the more sensible choice by a wide margin.
It is also the version you can plausibly do on a weeknight without organising your month around it. The full dining room is a three-hour commitment with a dress code and a rhythm; the bar is dinner, an expensive one, but dinner.
Booking, and how far ahead
Reservations go through the restaurant's own system and the desirable slots — Friday and Saturday evenings, anything at a reasonable hour — go first. Weekday early seatings and the bar are meaningfully easier, and the bar in particular turns over enough that late availability is not unheard of.
Cancellation terms are strict, as they are at every restaurant working on this model, because an empty four-top on a Saturday cannot be resold at short notice. Read the terms when you book rather than when you need to change the date.
Where it sits in the city now
New York has more genuinely excellent expensive restaurants than it did when this room set the terms, and several of them are doing more interesting things at lower prices. The argument for Eleven Madison Park is no longer that it is unambiguously the best in the city.
The argument is the room and the service. The dining room on Madison Square Park is one of the great interiors in American restaurants, and the floor team operates at a level that most kitchens never reach regardless of what is on the plate. If that is what you are paying for, it delivers.
The park, which is part of it
The restaurant looks onto Madison Square Park and the address is not incidental. Arriving early enough to walk the park before dinner changes the evening — it is a short, well-kept green space in a part of the city that otherwise gives you very little of that.
The Flatiron neighbourhood around it also solves the drinks-first problem without a cab, which matters when your table is at half past eight and you do not want to sit in the lounge for an hour paying lounge prices.
Whether the price is defensible
There is no useful answer to this that applies to everyone, but there is a useful way to frame it. At three hundred and eighty-five a head the restaurant is competing with a weekend away rather than with other dinners, and it should be judged on that scale rather than against the bill at a good neighbourhood restaurant.
On that scale it does hold up for a specific kind of evening — a milestone, a long-postponed occasion, a meal that is the point of the day rather than an event inside it. What it does not do is work as a casual splurge, and people who book it that way tend to leave feeling the number more than the food.
The bar menu changes that calculation entirely. Two hundred and twenty-five is still a lot of money for dinner, but it is inside the range of things New Yorkers do occasionally rather than annually, and the cooking is not a diminished version.
Practical notes
Dietary requirements are handled properly here and should be flagged at booking rather than on arrival. A kitchen building a seven-course progression needs the notice, and given the price you should expect them to accommodate it well, which they do.
Budget three hours for the dining room and closer to ninety minutes for the bar. If you have a show or a train afterwards, take the bar; the full menu is not a meal you rush and attempting to rush it wastes the money.
