NoPa is a name invented for the blocks north of the Panhandle, and it stuck because there was suddenly something there worth naming. The neighbourhood's restaurant density is concentrated on Divisadero Street roughly between Fell and Turk — six blocks that contain more genuinely booked-out dining rooms than most whole districts of San Francisco. Understanding how those six blocks work is the difference between a good Saturday and standing outside reading a menu you cannot get a table for.

The room the neighbourhood is named after
Nopa, at 560 Divisadero Street, is the restaurant that gave the neighbourhood its name and it has been busy continuously for a very long time. It is a large, high-ceilinged room built around an open kitchen and a wood oven, it serves late by San Francisco standards, and its communal table and bar seats are the release valve for everyone who did not book. That combination — proper cooking, a late kitchen, and a real walk-in option — is why it has outlasted a decade of newer arrivals.
The method: book if you can. If you cannot, arrive early, put your name down, and take the bar. The late slot is the other reliable route, and it is a considerably more pleasant way to eat here than a nine o'clock table you waited ninety minutes for.
The one you book weeks out
Che Fico, upstairs at 838 Divisadero Street, is the Italian room that spent its first years as the hardest reservation in the city and has settled into merely difficult. It is a bright, plant-and-tile room up a flight of stairs, and the cooking is the reason people persist with the booking process. Downstairs, its more casual sibling operates on a different footing entirely and is the sensible fallback.
The pattern that repeats along this street is exactly that: a flagship room that requires planning, with something adjacent that does not. If you learn nothing else about NoPa, learn that the fallback is usually within fifty feet of the thing you could not get into.
The rest of the six blocks
The Mill at 736 Divisadero is the bakery-and-coffee anchor, known for thick toast and for a morning queue that is a neighbourhood institution in its own right. Bar Crudo covers raw seafood. Souvla's Divisadero location does Greek counter service, which is the fastest good meal on the street. Madrone Art Bar at the Fell corner is the long-running bar with live music and its Motown night. Between them the street covers breakfast through last call without you needing to move the car.
How to actually run a Saturday here
The version that works: coffee and toast at The Mill early, walk south into the Panhandle and Golden Gate Park, come back at five, put your name in at Nopa, have a drink at Madrone while you wait, eat at seven. The version that fails: arriving at eight without a booking and treating the street as an open field. It is six blocks and they are all full at the same time.
