Los Angeles has an unusual number of world-class museums that cost nothing to enter, and a matching number of visitors who drive across the county and get turned away at the door. The two facts are related. Free admission here almost never means walk in; it means the ticket is free and you still have to have one. The rules differ at every institution, and the difference is where people come unstuck.
Every one of these institutions releases tickets on its own schedule, and the good windows are gone within hours of opening. Ask Karpo which of them still has slots for the day you want, and get a route that puts the booked one first and the walk-in one after.
Free, but reserved — the Getty problem
Admission to the Getty Center is free and a timed-entry reservation is required. Not recommended, required. You book online or call (310) 440-7300, and it is genuinely free — the money is in the car park, at $25, dropping to $15 after 3pm and $10 after 6pm, and free on Saturdays after 6pm. Parking is cashless. The Center is closed on Mondays.
The late-afternoon parking tiers are the most underused thing about the place. A reservation for the back half of the day costs ten or fifteen dollars less to park for and lands you on the hill for the hour when the light across the courtyards is at its best. Most people book the morning out of habit.
The Villa caps the day, and closes a road you would expect to use
The Getty Villa reopened on 27 June 2025 after being shut by the January 2025 Palisades fire, and it did not come back on its old terms. Entry is still free and still requires a timed reservation, but the site now runs on a reduced schedule and daily attendance is capped at 500 visitors. That is a small number for a museum of its profile, and the practical consequence is that Villa slots go before Center slots do.
There is a second trap that has nothing to do with tickets. The Villa is not currently reachable via Sunset Boulevard; you have to come in from Pacific Coast Highway. If you let a navigation app route you down Sunset out of habit, you will arrive at a closure and lose the entry window you booked. Parking runs $25, or $15 after 3pm.
When free tickets are a release, not a queue
The Huntington in San Marino is open 10am to 5pm Wednesday through Monday and closed Tuesdays, and it enforces timed entry hard on Fridays, weekends, holidays and through peak season. Its free tickets are the ones worth setting an alarm for: Free Day tickets are released on the last Thursday of each month at 9am, for admission the following week, and they go until sold out. This is a release, not a line — turning up hopefully on the day does not work.
The Broad works on a related logic with a friendlier default. General admission is free, an advance timed ticket is recommended rather than mandatory, and walk-ups are available every day. The scarcity sits one layer in: the Kusama Infinity Mirror Rooms need their own advance reservation, with extra tickets released online daily. Standard hours are 11am to 5pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 11am to 8pm Thursday, and 10am to 6pm at weekends, closed Mondays.
Where the discount is a time of day
LACMA recommends an advance timed-entry ticket for everyone, members included, and you can book online, at the ticket office, or by calling 323-857-6010. The saving is residency-based rather than day-based: Los Angeles County residents get in free on weekdays after 3pm with valid ID, and County residents aged 17 and under are free at all times. Bring the ID; the offer is checked.
The Norton Simon in Pasadena is the outlier that rewards the unplanned visit. Advance tickets are not required at all, and admission is free for everyone on the first Friday of the month between 4pm and 7pm, with no reservation. If you want an evening that does not depend on having booked something two weeks ago, this is the one.
The one where you simply pay
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures charges $25 for adults, $19 for visitors aged 62 and over, and $15 for students 18 and over with valid ID; anyone 17 and under is free. Timed reservations are encouraged but not required, which makes it the most walk-in-friendly of the big-ticket institutions and a reasonable fallback when the free ones have sold out from under you.
Building a day that survives contact with reality
Sequence by rigidity, not by geography. Put the reservation-only site first — the Getty Center or the Villa, whichever you managed to book — because that is the one with a window you cannot miss. Put a walk-in institution second, so an overrun costs you nothing. Crossing the county between two timed slots on the same afternoon is how otherwise good plans fall apart, and the traffic between the Westside and Pasadena is not an edge case.
