Walk Through a Giant, Working Model of San Francisco Bay — for Free

A whole bay in one warehouse: the concrete model engineers used before computers, free to walk around, half an hour by ferry.

See the whole bay at once, free.

Ferry Building to the Bay Model, Then the Seahorse

⛴️ Thirty minutes across the bay

The Golden Gate Ferry leaves the Ferry Building from Gates B and C and reaches Sausalito in thirty minutes; the weekend 10:15 boat takes an hour. Adult fare is $8.50 with Clipper or any contactless bank card and $14.00 for a paper ticket, collected on the way into San Francisco. From the landing it is a flat walk north on Bridgeway, 1.2 miles to 2100 Bridgeway, about twenty-five minutes at a steady pace and thirty-five with stops; Marin Transit 17 covers the same stretch if it is raining. Open Tuesday to Friday 9 to 3 and Saturday 9 to 4, closed Sunday, Monday, every federal holiday and the Saturday before a Monday holiday. What is posted at the door is the final word.

🔧 Inside the tide machine

A computer-controlled pump and valves raise and lower the water here, so with the pump running a lunar day of twenty-four hours and fifty minutes passes in fifteen minutes. Staff run it on no fixed daily schedule, so call 415-289-3007 the morning you go and ask whether the pumps will be on. Dry, the concrete still maps the coast you cross every day, the dredged ship channels and the Delta channels that carry forty percent of California's runoff. The model went up in 1957 to test a plan for damming the bay into a freshwater lake, gained its Delta arm in 1969, and worked as a research tool until 2000. Lunch is a ten-minute walk north at 305 Harbor Drive: sandwiches at midday, Tuscan seafood after, jazz or salsa some evenings.

🌅 Leave on the boat that catches the light

Sausalito Seahorse lists 11:30 to 8 Wednesday and Thursday and to 9 Friday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, and moves with the season, so call 415-331-2899 before counting on a table or a set. The dock is 1.7 miles and thirty-five minutes back along the water; leave the restaurant forty minutes before you sail. Afternoon boats out of Sausalito run 1:35, 3:35, 5:05 and 6:30 on weekdays and 1:25, 3:10, 5:00 and 6:55 at weekends, and a mechanical problem has the weekday timetable on a temporary footing, so check goldengate.org for the day's list. In November sunset falls between 5:11 and 4:51, which puts the 5:00 or 5:05 crossing in the last of the light.
