Walk Fort Totten's Waterfront at Sunset, Then Eat Greek in Bayside
Queens ends at a historic fort on the water. Time the walk for golden hour, then ride Bell Boulevard to a Greek table.
🗺️ From the Fort to Bell Boulevard
🏰 Old Fort Walls Along the Shoreline
Fort Totten sits at the far northeast edge of Queens, where the park grounds roll over low hills toward the water. Stay on the public paths and the history comes to you, from the old brick officers' houses to the stone walls of the battery meeting the shoreline. Not every historic building opens to visitors, and guided tours follow their own NYC Parks schedule, worth checking before you head out. The grounds stay open until 9:00 PM, leaving room to linger through dusk.

🍽️ Greek Supper on Bell Boulevard
From the Fort Totten gate, the Q13 bus runs south along Bell Boulevard toward Flushing. Ride about 3 km to the blocks near 38th Avenue, where Avli the Little Greek Tavern serves seafood, souvlaki, and lamb chops in a room that feels like a family kitchen. Share the spanakopita or the vegetarian moussaka with the table. Portions run generous, and Greek wines and red sangria fill out the drinks list. The kitchen closes at 9:00 PM most nights and 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

🧭 How the Afternoon Fits Together
Treat this as a late-afternoon plan for any clear day. Through late October, arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 PM and the shoreline walk lines up with a sunset close to 6:00 PM. After November 1 the clocks change and the light fades about an hour earlier, and an arrival near 3:30 PM keeps the same rhythm. Bring a layer for the breeze off the water. The bus ride down Bell Boulevard is short, and dinner at Avli fits comfortably before the kitchen closes.
