🎹 Opening Night in the Sound Room

🌀 What Basinski Plays

William Basinski built his name on decaying tape loops, and from Monday, November 9, through Wednesday, November 11, he plays Passing the Cup of Sorrows, his first album in six years, in the Sound Room at Public Records. The record is a single piece of about 40 minutes for solo piano and subtle electronics. Expect slow, spare piano phrases meeting quiet electronics in an intimate listening room, closer to a concert than a club night.

🎛️ Three Nights, Three Openers

Each night pairs Basinski with a different opener at 8 PM: Cholla on Monday, muein on Tuesday, and Chantal Michelle on Wednesday. Doors open at 7 PM and Basinski starts at 9 PM. Public Records sets the house rules for these shows: 21 and over, with large bags and coats checked, and doors close one hour before the end time. The venue sits at 233 Butler Street in Gowanus, about a 10-minute walk from Bergen St (F, G) or Union St (R) and 15 minutes from Atlantic Av–Barclays Ctr. Check MTA's live elevator status before counting on any station for step-free access.

🎧 Tickets and Other Picks

A Basinski night lists at 57 dollars and 68 cents on DICE with fees included. Beyond the run, two DURATIONS nights stand out: Eiko Ishibashi's live score to Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film GIFT at Pioneer Works on Thursday, November 12, at 7 PM, and Terre Thaemlitz's debut live piano performance at Roulette on Sunday, November 15, at 7 PM. The festival pass lists at 212 dollars and 18 cents and covers the ticketed venues, so price your chosen shows one by one against it before buying. Emily A. Sprague and LEYA play the Whitney lobby on Friday, November 13. That show needs no festival pass, only the museum's free Free Friday Nights admission, booked through the Whitney.
