The High Line to Chelsea Market, Before the City Wakes

The High Line opens at 7:00 AM and costs nothing. Walk the southern stretch north from Gansevoort Street to the 14th Street exit, then one block up Tenth Avenue to 15th Street and the market door. Chelsea Market opens at 7:00 AM, but its bakeries start at 8:00 AM, so the walk comes first and breakfast second.

Go early and the path is yours.

Two stops before nine

🚶 7:00 AM at the Gansevoort gate

The Gansevoort Street gate sits at Washington Street, with the elevator on the northwest corner beside the stairs. Entry is free, and the gates open at 7:00 AM — the card lists the long-season schedule, April 1 through November 30. Climb into the old rail bed, follow the plantings north past the Standard, and leave by the 14th Street stairs, which drop you onto Tenth Avenue. Early mornings tend to be quieter, before the tour groups find the benches.

🥐 8:00 AM at the market door

The concourse opens at 7:00 AM daily and closes at 10:00 PM, Christmas Day excepted — but at seven the doors are open, not the counters. Amy's Bread starts at 8:00 AM with pastries, sticky buns and coffee. Black Seed Bagels, at the 425 West 15th Street entrance, opens at 8:00 AM daily and closes at 4:00 PM. From the 14th Street stairs, keep north on Tenth Avenue one block to 15th Street, turn right, and the door is a few steps in. Time the walk so you arrive at eight, when the shutters are up and the queue is still short.
