What? GD Visited This Fake Chanel Store?
A hand-built fake Chanel boutique in Nolita, where Tom Sachs recreates the 31 Rue Cambon store in plywood and tape.
🛍️ A Chanel boutique, entirely handmade

🎭 What Tom Sachs actually made
Tom Sachs turned his own studio into a Chanel boutique and named it 31 Rue Cambon, after the label's flagship in Paris. The clothing, jewelry, furniture, packaging, and even the window displays are not ready-made. They are built by hand from plywood, cardboard, acrylic, and tape, and a crisp-looking tweed suit reads up close as a handmade model with every seam and cut left visible.
🏬 A boutique with no merchandise
From the sidewalk, the awnings read CHANEL and the door carries a hand-drawn 31 Rue Cambon sign, close enough to make passersby pause before stepping in. Inside, five tweed suits line the wall above an octagonal table, staged like a real luxury floor. Nothing here is for sale, and none of it is a real product, yet the room reproduces everything a Chanel boutique is supposed to have.
📍 How to see it before it closes
The installation sits at 245 Centre Street in Nolita, a short walk from Little Italy and SoHo. Public hours run Thursdays and Fridays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, through October 10. Admission is free, though space is limited and no ticket or RSVP has been published. Arriving early on a weekend afternoon improves the odds of getting inside.
