🕯️ A Revolutionary Memorial

Washington Square gives a walk through Philadelphia a quieter, more reflective chapter. The 6.4 acre park stretches across Washington Square West and Society Hill in the southeast quadrant of Center City. Its quiet pathways sit within Independence National Historical Park, with the National Park Service caring for the grounds.

At the heart of its Revolutionary War history is the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier. An eternal flame and a Houdon Washington statue give the memorial its solemn focus. A soothing central fountain and huge shady trees frame the square, with more memorials and signs to explore.

This open space was laid out on the city grid by Thomas Holme, the surveyor working for William Penn. You can reach it on Walnut Street between 6th and 7th Streets, and it stays open 24 hours a day throughout the week and year.
