Staten Island Ferry To Snug Harbor: A Free Lenape Ranger Walk, Nov 8

One morning without tickets links the free Staten Island Ferry with a ranger-led Lenape storytelling walk at Snug Harbor, a campus built as a home for retired sailors and opened in 1833. Board at Whitehall, cross the harbor, and spend the rest of the morning on 83 acres of lawns, gardens, and Greek Revival buildings.

Ride free and learn Lenape stories.

Whitehall Ferry Terminal to Snug Harbor

⛴️ Cross the harbor at no cost

The Staten Island Ferry leaves Whitehall Terminal about every half hour on weekends and takes roughly 25 minutes to reach St George. Both directions are free, so the crossing works as a harbor tour on its own. Stay on the right side of the deck after departure for the cleanest view of the Statue of Liberty, then follow the crowd out toward the bus bays on the Staten Island side.

🌳 Follow the rangers past Lenape stories

On Sunday Nov 8 the Urban Park Rangers lead a Lenape Folktales walk from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. across the Snug Harbor grounds. Rangers share stories that come from the Lenape and talk about the lessons they still carry, and visitors are welcome to bring folktales from their own heritage. The event page lists it as free, with no registration, and describes it as a walk around the grounds.

🧭 Work backwards from the start time

Weekend boats leave Whitehall on the hour and half hour; take the 9:30 a.m. crossing, which lands at St George around 9:55, or the 10:00 a.m. boat if you can catch the 10:30 bus. From the terminal, board the S40 bus along Richmond Terrace (standard $3.00 MTA bus fare, paid separately; the ferry and ranger walk are free) and step off at Richmond Terrace/Sailors Snug Harbor Gate, about ten minutes down the road. Rangers can cancel for weather, so check the NYC Parks listing on the morning of Nov 8 before you leave.
