A Brownsville Community Garden Teaching Food Justice

An off-grid, solar-powered plot on Osborn Street where kids and neighbors learn how food gets grown.

Bring a young gardener along.

🌱 Lessons In The Soil

Abib Newborn Garden treats a Brooklyn lot as a classroom. This Brownsville community garden runs off the grid on solar power, and the work of growing food sits at the center of every lesson, with food justice and urban agriculture as the starting points.

The City Parks Foundation brings its Learning Gardens programs here, gathering school groups, local youth, and community members around the beds. Instruction covers garden maintenance, urban biodiversity, and healthy eating, which makes the plot a strong pick for families with curious kids and for neighbors who want hands on time with soil and seedlings rather than a passive stroll.

The gates keep short weekday hours. Monday through Wednesday the garden opens from 1 PM to 5 PM, Friday from noon to 5 PM, and it stays closed Thursday and all weekend. Head to 495 Osborn Street in Brooklyn on an open afternoon, and plan around those windows before you set out.
