Send a Letter Home From the United Nations With UN Stamps

Postage sold in the concourse only counts on mail sent from this building, a real keepsake for family far away.

📮 How the UN Mail Run Works

UN stamps in dollar values work only on mail posted inside this headquarters. A regular USPS mailbox outside will not take them. Write the card at home, address it, and mail it before you leave the building.

No paid tour ticket is needed for the counter, and walk-ins without a tour booking are allowed. Entry still takes three steps. Every visitor registers in advance on the UN visitor registration page. Visitors 18 and older bring an original government photo ID printed in Latin letters, and anyone under 18 must come with an adult. Check in at 801 First Avenue at 45th Street, about a 12-minute walk east of Grand Central, then cross to the visitors entrance at 46th Street for airport-style screening. There is no bag check, and water or large bags stay outside.

The UN Stamps counter sits on the concourse level of the General Assembly Building, open weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM, with visitor gates closing at 4:45 PM. A one-ounce letter costs 78 cents to a US address and 1.70 dollars to any other country. Security closures can happen without notice. Call the counter at (212) 963-7698 on the day of your visit to confirm it is open. The building is closed November 26 and December 25. Official details sit on the UN Visitors Services and UN Stamps sites, checked November 5.
