Chelsea: Sell Old Coats at Beacon's, Then Shop Mackage
Beacon's Closet pays 50% of its own resale price in store credit for coats it accepts, or 30% in cash. That credit stays inside Beacon's, five blocks from the Mackage sample sale.
Beacon's → Mackage → Buffalo Exchange
The trade-first math: credit is a share of resale
Resale counters pay a share of the price they will put on a garment, not a share of what it cost new. At Beacon's Closet, a garment the store prices at $49.95 earns $14.99 in cash or $24.98 in store credit. That is the published 30% cash and 50% credit rate, applied to the store's own appraisal of items it accepts. The credit is not a discount on the trip: it spends at Beacon's four New York shops and nowhere else, and it will not come off a bill at the Mackage sale. Fast-fashion labels are a hard sell there, and children's clothing is not bought at all.

Beacon's Closet: what the buying counter asks
10 West 13th Street, open daily 11 AM to 8 PM. Selling is walk-in, first come, first served, with no appointment and a ceiling of 50 items per seller. Bring a US government photo ID or a passport, and be 18 or older. Buyers stop taking items an hour before closing; a same-day appraisal averages about an hour, and in peak autumn weeks the wait stretches to two to four hours with the queue filling by early afternoon. Morning is the safer slot. Sellers must claim any unpurchased items, including the bag or container they were dropped off in, by 7 PM on the day of their sale; unclaimed items go to charity half an hour before closing.

Mackage Sample Sale: three days on West 18th
125 West 18th Street, five blocks north of the buying counter. Doors run Tuesday Nov 3, 8 AM–8 PM; Wednesday Nov 4, 9 AM–8 PM; Thursday Nov 5, 8 AM–6 PM. Entry is free and registration is mandatory: one Eventbrite ticket per person, government photo ID matching the ticket name at the door. Cards and debit only, no cash and no tap, with the same ID required to match the card at checkout. Free coat and bag check is compulsory and all sales are final. The organiser advertises up to 70% off women's, men's and kids' parkas, light jackets and accessories, and sample sizes run short.

Buffalo Exchange: the other counter, closed Nov 3
114 West 26th Street, Monday to Saturday 11 AM–8 PM and Sunday 11 AM–7 PM, with one exception: the Chelsea shop is shut on Tuesday Nov 3 for Election Day. That rules out pairing it with the sale's first day; Nov 4 or Nov 5 works, and another week works better. Selling is walk-in through a QR waitlist: sign in when you arrive, then be at the store within an hour of signing up, because a seller who is absent when their name is called may have to rejoin the queue. Bring a government-issued ID. Payout runs 25% cash or 50% store credit on its selling price, and that credit is good at Buffalo Exchange.

Weekend extension: Nov 7 market and coat drop-off
Saturday Nov 7 is its own outing, not an add-on to a sale-day afternoon. THRIFT2DEATH takes over Olly Olly Market at 255 11th Avenue, with Early Bird entry from 11 AM to 1 PM and free admission from 1 PM to 5 PM with an RSVP. Chelsea Flea at 29 West 25th Street opens on weekends; confirm the day's hours before setting out. Coats that no counter accepts can go to the New York Cares coat drive, which collects across the city from October through February.
