Housed in an 1880s gothic revival building, this official visitor center pairs local tips and maritime dioramas with reliable amenities.
Description

Housed in an 1880s gothic revival building that once served as headquarters for the Second Corps of Cadets, this official visitor center preserves the surviving drill shed after a 1982 fire. Inside, detailed maritime dioramas recreate Salem’s bustling waterfront during its era as a wealthy trading port connecting Massachusetts to ports across Europe, China, and the East Indies. The space features a shop stocked with National Parks merchandise, a small children's play area, and an adjoining park honoring Essex County veterans, while staff provide local recommendations and practical tips for exploring downtown.
