Walk Salem's 1692 Story Whenever Your Group Is Ready

Self-guided audio through Salem's witch trial sites, from the Armory visitor center to the 1692 memorial, on your own clock.

This tour lives in the Shaka Guide app, so nobody waits for you at the start. A recorded narrator, named on the operator's tour page as Lizzie Gerecitano, plays stories, music and walking directions as your phone's GPS reaches each stop. You start when you like, pause where you like, and the tour stays on the phone after the walk.

The booking page lists twelve stops, from the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial beside Charter Street Cemetery. The operator allows one to two hours for the core walk, plus extra time for October crowds, museums and snack breaks.

The card below books the Viator listing, priced per group of up to seven travelers. The redeem code is the 10-digit booking reference printed under the barcode on your ticket, entered in the app under Support, then Retrieve Purchases.

Haunted Salem: Witch Trials and Ghosts TourSelf-guided GPS audio walk in the Shaka Guide app, starting at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center. Runs offline once downloaded.www.viator.com

A Meetinghouse Plaque, the Bewitched Statue and the Allison House

The first story stop is the Daniel Low building. The operator says the First Meetinghouse of Salem stood on this spot, that the preliminary witch trials were held there, and that a plaque on the side of the building says so. Rockafellas, the restaurant on its ground floor, is told as haunted.

The route then stops at the Bewitched statue in Lappin Park and reaches the Ropes Mansion, which played the Allison house in Hocus Pocus. The house charges admission and, by the operator's hours list, opens for self-guided visits on Saturdays and Sundays with timed entry. The garden behind it is free and open all year. Hamilton Hall on Chestnut Street closes this stretch with Samuel McIntire's Federal architecture and the story of the activist Remond family.

From Judge Corwin's House to the Memorial Benches

The second half follows the 1692 thread. The Witch House was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, and the booking page calls it the oldest home still standing associated with the trials. The Witch Dungeon Museum is only pointed out on the way. The Merchant, a hotel, is told as standing on the grounds of Sheriff George Corwin's home, the sheriff said to have abused those accused of witchcraft.

Old Town Hall in Derby Square, another Hocus Pocus filming location, comes next. The last two stops are Charter Street Cemetery and the Salem Witch Trials Memorial beside it, with one granite bench for each victim. Both the booking page and the operator give the memorial thirty minutes, the longest stop of the twelve.

Moonlit Streets, Daytime Doors

The listing sells this as a walk under moonlit streets, and the audio plays at any hour. The places with doors keep daytime schedules. The National Park Service lists the Armory visitor center at 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily. The operator lists Charter Street Cemetery at 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in high season and the Witch House at typically 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. By those hours, a walk after dark means hearing about the cemetery and the interiors from the sidewalk.

Entry fees are separate. The booking page excludes the Witch House, the Witch Dungeon Museum, the Ropes Mansion, Old Town Hall and the Peabody Essex Museum, and the operator lists Old Town Hall as under renovation.

Download Before You Walk

The listing asks for a compatible smartphone, location services switched on, and the tour downloaded and redeemed before you arrive, over strong Wi-Fi or data. Once downloaded, the tour runs without data or Wi-Fi and uses GPS for the directions. The operator's packing list for this walk adds a backup battery and a charging cable. Neither the listing nor the operator's pages say how many phones one redeem code unlocks.

The route runs in one direction. Joining partway works, the operator says, at the cost of the stops and stories before that point. The listing marks the walk as wheelchair and stroller accessible, and the operator's own pages do not address step-free access.

Start at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center, where the booking page notes park rangers, free restrooms and water for purchase inside, with benches in Armory Park outside. For October, the operator passes on the city's advice to leave the car outside downtown and arrive by commuter rail or ferry, and notes that Halloween closures begin by noon on October 31, sometimes earlier. Cancelling at least 24 hours before the scheduled start on the booking gets a full refund. From the visitor center, the narrator takes the walk one stop at a time.
