Description

Bauer & Hill designed the lower columned pedestal, which supports an eleven-foot bronze figure of Hebe, the mythological cupbearer to the gods. Sculpted by German artist Franz Machtl and cast in Munich, the figure carries a cup and pitcher. Rosenberg’s estate executors intervened on the original design: worried that nudity might cause offense and tarnish the donor's memory, they insisted on draped clothing. Installed near Rosenberg's childhood home on South Michigan Avenue, the monument was restored in 2004, though it operates purely as an ornament today and no longer provides drinking water.
