Ride the Roosevelt Island Tram 90 minutes before sunset, end at the lighthouse

A cable-car crossing sets up the evening, then the island's north tip faces Manhattan as the light drops.

Board 90 minutes before sunset.

East 60th Street to the north tip

🚡 Cross the East River by cable car

The Roosevelt Island Tramway leaves from East 60th Street and Second Avenue and runs beside the Queensboro Bridge, with Midtown falling away behind the cabin. It takes standard MTA fares, including OMNY tap-to-pay, and each ride takes its own fare, the return included. Cars run every 15 minutes outside rush hour and every 7.5 minutes on weekday evenings from 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Board about 90 minutes before sunset to cover the line at the station and the trip north.

🌅 Wait for dusk at the 1872 lighthouse

Lighthouse Park sits at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island, built around a stone lighthouse from 1872. From the tram plaza, walk north along the river promenade or ride the Red Bus, a fare-free circulator that serves stops across the island. The lawn looks across the East River to the Manhattan shoreline, and the sky behind the towers turns first as the sun drops. Benches, open grass, and restrooms make it easy to settle in. Confirm evening access to the park before staying past dusk.

🗺️ Time the whole line around the light

The plan works as one line from Manhattan to the island's north tip. Check the sunset time for your date, board the tram about 90 minutes earlier, and choose the promenade walk or the Red Bus to reach the lighthouse lawn with time to spare. Autumn pulls the whole outing into the late afternoon. Budget a second fare for the ride back. The return tram runs until 2:00 AM from Sunday to Thursday, and until 3:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
