Practice Chinese Calligraphy Beside an Ed Young Show
A two-hour brush session at the Museum of Chinese in America pairs stroke practice with a drink in hand.
🖌️ One Evening on Centre Street
🏮 What You Practice
The workshop runs inside the Museum of Chinese in America and draws its prompts from the current special exhibition, Ed Young's Bright Worlds. Instructors walk the room through basic brush holds and stroke order before anyone attempts a full character. The session pairs that practice with something to sip, which keeps the pace closer to a studio evening than a lecture. No prior experience with Chinese writing is assumed. Materials sit ready at each place.
🍵 At the Long Table
You check in at 215 Centre Street, take a seat at a long table, and work with ink, brush, and paper laid out in advance. Instructors move between seats and correct grip and angle by hand. Most people fill several sheets before settling on one to keep, and the room stays conversational throughout. People compare characters across the table and ask about the illustrator whose work sets the theme.
🎟️ Price, Timing, and Fit
The session runs Thursday, October 15, from half past six until half past eight in the evening. Early bird admission costs 25 dollars, general admission 30, and MOCA members pay 20. Students and seniors enter at the 25 dollar rate, with tickets sold through the museum site. Book ahead rather than arriving at the door. Anyone who wants a quiet walk through the galleries should come during regular museum hours instead.
