Dollhouse Coats and Paper-Doll Fashion at FIT's Free Exhibition
The Museum at FIT gathers over 170 pieces to show how dollhouse embroidery, paper doll tabs, and miniature wardrobes shaped real runway silhouettes.
👗 On the Racks
🏠 Dollhouses Sewn into Runway Coats
The Special Exhibitions Gallery pairs runway pieces with miniature garments, highlighted by Lirika Matoshi’s 2024 Apartment coat stitching miniature dining rooms and unmade beds onto cream wool. The exhibition also features Martin Margiela’s fall 1994 collection, which enlarged doll clothes to 5.2 times their original size to expose imperfect construction and exaggerated seams. Across two centuries and over 170 objects, the show demonstrates how play clothes continue to inspire high fashion.
✂️ Paper Tabs and Childhood Play
The thematic galleries highlight playful proportions, including Jeremy Scott’s 2017 Moschino collection featuring printed paper-doll pull tabs, alongside Japanese Takara Jenny and vintage fashion dolls. Curators pair miniature vinyl figures with full-sized garments, offering a nostalgic dialogue between childhood dress-up and runway design across generations.
