MoMI in the Dark, Downtown Graveyards at Dusk, ISAW's Ancient Curses

Pick by mood, film props by lantern in Astoria, old churchyards at dusk downtown, or free ancient magic uptown.

Pick one night and plan the trip.

🏮 Sat, Oct 24, MoMI With the Lights Off

This is the most theatrical of the three. The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria turns off its gallery lights, and a guide leads the group by lantern past props from The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs, with special effects demonstrations along the way. A café drink comes first at 5:30 PM. At 50 dollars it costs the most, and the October 24 ticket adds an optional Exorcist screening earlier that day.

⚰️ Thu, Oct 29, Death Downtown at Dusk

This one is outdoors and on foot. A guide walks Lower Manhattan from 7:00 PM to about 8:45 PM, tracing four centuries of death in the city past Trinity Church, St. Paul's Chapel, St. Peter's Church and City Hall Park, with stories of epidemics, executions and forgotten burial grounds. Tickets cost 38 dollars. The walk is pitched at adults, and children or teens can join at a parent's discretion.

🧿 Fri, Oct 30, Ancient Curses at ISAW, Free

This is the quietest and the only free option. The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World on East 84th Street leads an hour-long tour of its exhibition Cursed! The Power of Magic in the Ancient World, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, focused on the artifacts and ideas behind ancient magic. It is free with no advance registration, which suits a last-minute plan.
