Manhattan Edge Route: Touch Three Shores

Stand at Manhattan's southern tip, follow the Hudson below a landmark bridge, and reach the island's forested northern seam. Three stops turn geography into a day of harbor air, monumental infrastructure, and tidal calm.

Three edges to trace

Set the baseline

The Battery puts the route at Manhattan's southern tip, where perennial gardens open toward the harbor. Walk past the grand lawns and take in the waterline before the day crowds build. Mark the island's first boundary in your mind, then save the map for the long jump north.

Read the steel

At Fort Washington Park, the Hudson feels close beneath the George Washington Bridge. A shared trail threads the shoreline while the Little Red Lighthouse gives the immense structure a human scale. Pause where the red beacon meets the gray span, then look across to the Palisades before continuing north.

Find the seam

Inwood Hill Park delivers Manhattan's last natural forest beside the Hudson. Rugged trails climb through old-growth trees, while the northern waterline opens toward the Henry Hudson Bridge and the Palisades. Use Overlook Meadow to watch city and estuary share one frame. End here slowly, with the island's edge no longer abstract.
