Library of Congress: Free Thursday Nights in the Main Reading Room
One night a week the Jefferson Building opens its Main Reading Room floor for five-minute walks, with drinks in the Great Hall and dinner a short walk away.
Library of Congress to Bullfeathers on the Hill
🎟️ Two tickets, one evening
Two separate free tickets stand between the sidewalk and the center desk. The first gets you inside: reserve the timed-entry pass for the Thursday 5:00 p.m. slot, online up to 30 days ahead, and a daytime pass will not carry into the evening. That pass covers Live! at the Library, when the Great Hall becomes a happy hour with drinks and snacks sold under the ceiling. The second is the reading room walkthrough, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., about five minutes around the center desk, with free tickets handed out in the Great Hall ten minutes before each round. Supply is limited and first come, first served, and the entry pass does not guarantee a place.

🍽️ Dinner seven minutes south
First Street runs south to Bullfeathers, and the walk from the library's front steps takes about seven minutes. That lands dinner around 7:30 p.m., an easy finish after two hours on your feet, and the kitchen serves until 10:00 p.m. on weekdays. The Reuben and the black and blue Caesar salad are the orders to know, drinks stay inexpensive for the neighborhood, and the sidewalk tables are worth claiming on a mild night.

🗺️ Ordering the evening
The reading room sets the clock. Walk the center desk before the Great Hall fills, then drift through the exhibitions with a drink in hand. The last Thursday walkthrough ends at 7:00 p.m., the doors stop admitting visitors at 7:30 p.m., and the building closes at 8:00 p.m., which leaves a 7:30 p.m. table at Bullfeathers and two and a half hours there. The Jefferson Building stays shut on Sundays and Mondays, worth knowing if the plan slips by a day.
