Jockey's Ridge State Park
4.8 (6,720)park
Home to the Atlantic coast’s tallest active sand dunes, this desert-like expanse is a premier spot for hang gliding and sunsets.
Description

Beyond the shifting, granulated peaks of this tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic coast, the park transitions into maritime thickets and soundside beach access. While the dunes offer a desert-like expanse for kite flying and sunset watching, the landscape is active and fluid; walking conditions can range from deep, loose sand to firm paths depending on recent rainfall. The terrain is navigated via a scenic boardwalk, including a massive deck designed for accessibility. Beyond hiking, the park functions as a base for hang gliding lessons and water-based pursuits like windsurfing and paddling in the Roanoke Sound, supported by ranger-led nature programs.
