The Outer Banks Out Loud, From First Flight to Lighthouse

Stories, tips and driving directions play from your phone as GPS reaches more than 190 points between Corolla and Hatteras.

No guide meets you for this one. You buy the tour once, load it onto a phone and drive your own car, and the stories, tips and directions play by themselves as the phone's GPS reaches each spot. The listing counts more than 190 of those points and joins the Wright Brothers area and Cape Hatteras National Seashore into one route, with suggested plans for half a day, a full day or several days. One purchase covers everyone in the car, and it never expires. Once downloaded it runs offline and keeps playing where the phone has no signal.

The booking sends a voucher code by email and text; search for Download Audio Tour or GuideAlong. Redeem it with an Apple or Google account, then put the free GuideAlong app and this tour on the phone over Wi-Fi or data before you set off.

Three Ways Onto the Islands, Each With Its Own First Cue

The listing gives three ways in. From the south, the commentary begins right after you drive off the Ocracoke to Hatteras ferry. From the mainland on Highway 64, it starts about eighteen minutes before Roanoke Island and carries on toward Nags Head. On Highway 158, it starts about ten minutes before Kitty Hawk.

There is no fixed end. The narration follows your location, and you can start and finish anywhere along the route. A March 2026 reviewer wrote that the direction made no difference; it rerouted them either way. An April 2025 reviewer noted that after stopping to eat, it picked up where it left off once the car started moving.

Bodie Island Is the Lighthouse You Can Climb This Year

The listing still describes Cape Hatteras Lighthouse by its black and white candy stripe and suggests climbing it if you can. The park says that tower will not open for climbing in 2026 while it is being restored, though the grounds around it stay open day and night. Its July 24, 2026 project update lists the outer paint as already stripped, with the spiral daymark still to be repainted in the coming year. The stripes may not be there when you arrive.

Bodie Island Lighthouse, at the north end of the seashore, is open for climbs from late April to early November 2026. Tickets cost USD 10 for adults and USD 5 for seniors 62 and older, children 11 and under and visitors with disabilities. They are sold only on Recreation.gov, from 7:00 a.m., for that same day. Climbers must be at least 42 inches tall and under 260 pounds, and the stairs run just over 200 steps. The keepers' quarters visitor center there stays closed until mid-summer 2027 after a January 2025 fire; the outdoor areas are open. Further south, the listing also points you to Rodanthe's Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station.

The Wright Brothers Memorial Charges per Person, Not per Car

The tour covers the audio only; the listing leaves out entry fees, park passes and reservations. At Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, the park charges USD 10 per person, not per vehicle. Children under 16 do not need a pass, America the Beautiful passes are accepted, and the park takes no cash: pay by card at the entrance or in advance on Recreation.gov. Visitors from outside the United States pay the same USD 10; the memorial is not one of the 11 parks that add a nonresident fee. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed December 25.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore charges no entrance fee, and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island is free to enter. The Lost Colony drama and the Elizabethan Gardens there are run by park partners and charge their own fees.

The Rough Part Comes Before You Start the Engine

Getting it running is where reviewers stumble. One in September 2026 had no download email, one in November 2025 got it working only after several attempts, and one in November 2024 gave up after the first day. Before you leave Wi-Fi, open the tour in the app and check that it shows Start Touring; the listing says that means it is downloaded.

Keep the phone on a car charger in the lighter socket, which the listing prefers to the car's USB port, and play the sound through CarPlay, Android Auto or Bluetooth. Support answers daily by toll-free phone, chat and email. It is built for a car: an August 2026 reviewer touring by bicycle never used it. An April 2026 reviewer also found some information incorrect for 2026.

There is no meeting point and no pickup. The pin marks Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, one of the stops the listing names along the way, and you join the route wherever you drive onto the islands. Cancel at least 24 hours before your booked date for a full refund. Past that, the order and the pace are yours, all the way north to Corolla, where the pavement meets the sand.
