⚓ Guarding the Narrows
Fort Wadsworth ranks among the country's oldest continuously staffed military posts, set on the Staten Island bluff where the Narrows tightens the channel into New York Harbor. The granite tiers of Battery Weed rise straight from the shoreline, their casemate arches framing the water beneath the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The overlook path opens a wide view from the bridge towers across the harbor toward Lower Manhattan's distant skyline, the payoff of a short climb. Part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, the grounds stay open and free, with interpretive signs tracing the old coastal-defense batteries.
