Green-Wood's Quiet Autumn, Then Lunch at Industry City
A hushed, leaf-strewn loop on Brooklyn's highest ground, then a food-hall lunch one R stop away. Entry is free, the main gate opens at 8 a.m., and two hours covers the walk.
Where the two stops sit
🌳 In through the arch
Green-Wood is an active cemetery, not a park, and it is free every day of the year. From the Fifth Avenue and 25th Street arch, turn left onto Battle Avenue, follow it to Border Avenue, then take Battle Path uphill to Battle Hill, the highest natural ground in Brooklyn: about a third of a mile and ten minutes. Walk back the same way. From October 1 through October 31 the main gate opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.; the Fourth Avenue and 35th Street gate is open to walkers 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and to cars 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. November hours go up on green-wood.com/hours, so check before a late-fall visit, and be outside ten minutes before the gates lock. No bicycles, scooters or pets (service animals aside), and keep voices low near services and mourners.

🍜 Out at the courtyard
Ride the R one stop south from 25th Street to 36th Street, about two minutes, then walk eight minutes to 220 36th Street; or leave by the Sunset Park gate and walk five minutes west. Make Japan Village the lunch stop: its food hall opens at 11 a.m. every day and closes at 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Hometown Bar-B-Que, in Courtyard 5/6, serves noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and until 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, or until it sells out, and is closed on Mondays. Industry City's buildings stay open until 9 p.m., but every shop and kitchen keeps its own hours, so time lunch by the food hall and the barbecue pit rather than by the building.
