Free Thursday Nights at the Gardner: Courtyard After Dark and Empty Frames
One night a week the Venetian palazzo on Evans Way stays open after dark for free, and the 1990 theft still hangs on its walls.
🕯️ Free after five
Every Thursday the Gardner stays open until 9 pm and admission is free, with timed entry from 5 pm. Registration opens two days ahead, on Tuesday at 10 am, on the museum's ticket page; advance booking is strongly recommended, and day-of tickets are not guaranteed. The free ticket covers admission, not every program, so check whether a concert or special event is ticketed separately.
Upstairs, the Dutch Room still shows what the 1990 theft left behind. Rembrandt's Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee and A Lady and Gentleman in Black were cut from their frames, 13 works vanished, and none has returned. The empty gold frames are the room's originals, left as evidence rather than as an art installation.
The Courtyard rotates through about ten plantings a year; chrysanthemums run September into November, and the arrangement changes day to day. Café G stays open until 8 pm on Thursdays. The museum is at 25 Evans Way: Green Line E to Longwood Medical Area, four minutes on foot, or Orange Line to Ruggles, twelve. Official info: gardnermuseum.org (checked 10/30).
