Five Floors of Books Ring a 42-Foot Atrium in This Free Fifth Avenue Library

Walk in without a ticket, ride up to the Long Room, and read under a light well cut through a former department store.

Ride to the top floor first.

🏛 Read the Building First

Start high and work down. Step off the elevator on the top level and the Long Room opens above you, five levels of book stacks alongside a 42-foot atrium with daylight landing on the highest row. The 2021 renovation cut away parts of two floors to make that void, and the stacks now face the seating instead of sitting behind it.

Floors two through four hold the Marron Family circulating collection, more than 300,000 books and other browsable material across 44,000 square feet. Look for an available seat at a long table, unpack your laptop, and stay until closing. Hours run 8 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, 8 AM to 8 PM Friday, and 10 AM to 6 PM on weekends, and center hours can vary, especially around holidays, so check the library's site before you go.

Nothing here asks for a ticket or a booking. Above the stacks sits Midtown's only free, publicly accessible rooftop terrace, and it is easy to skip on a cold day. A free audio guide covers the architecture if you want the story behind the shelves.
