Manhattan Exhibition Stops

Design in a Gilded Age Home

Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum examines the decisions behind everyday objects inside Andrew Carnegie's mansion. The first floor introduces the collection through Design Across Time, while upper levels hold changing temporary exhibitions. Pick an object together and compare the choices you notice. Preserved architectural details frame the displays, and a touch screen explains the building's history. After the galleries, visitors can sit in the courtyard garden with a drink from the annex café.

A Campus Forum for Civic Inquiry

At John Jay College, Anya & Andrew Shiva Gallery explores social justice, human rights, and the law through contemporary art. The college's main exhibition space is open to the public. Artist talks, screenings, and performances extend its program into political and reconstructive themes. A solo visitor can look for a work that gives those subjects a concrete form. Plan around Monday through Friday hours, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Comparing Form and Civic Purpose

Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum considers the decisions behind everyday objects within Andrew Carnegie's mansion. Anya & Andrew Shiva Gallery brings contemporary art into discussions of social justice, human rights, and the law at John Jay College. Read together, the pair shifts attention from how things are designed to what artworks ask of society. For a solo visitor, carry one question between these settings, whose needs receive attention? That comparison connects the exhibitions without assuming they offer the same answers.
