Family Big-Band Jazz Hour at Columbus Circle: Playground, Lunch, 3 PM Show

Plan it for the relatives who arrive with a stroller: Columbus Circle at 10:30, the park's southwest corner and the biggest playground in Central Park, lunch by 12:15, a quiet hour, then Duke Ellington for families at 3 p.m. in Rose Theater. Every leg is ten minutes on foot or less.

The stroller comes up by elevator.

🌳 Stop One: the Park's Southwest Corner

Get off at 59 St–Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1) — the MTA lists the station as accessible, so the stroller comes up by elevator. The park's southwest corner is 130 m from the exit, two minutes away, and the park is open 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Heckscher Playground is 470 m and six minutes further in: 1.8 acres, the largest playground in Central Park, with swings, slides and a maze-like climber. The Conservancy lists an accessible surface and a transfer into the sand area, which is what makes a stroller work here. Restrooms sit in the Heckscher Building breezeway, open 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

🥪 Stop Two: Lunch, Then a Quiet Hour

Shake Shack is 700 m and about nine minutes from the playground, on the third floor of 10 Columbus Circle, open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays — burgers, fries and enough background noise that nobody minds a toddler.

For the hour before the show, the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center is 270 m and four minutes from Rose Theater: an indoor public space with tables and Wi-Fi, open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and the easiest place to feed a baby or let one nap. Gelato at Venchi, 250 m from the hall and open until 1 a.m. on Saturdays, is saved for after the show.

🎺 Stop Three: Duke Ellington at 3 PM

Rose Theater is on the fifth floor of Frederick P. Rose Hall at Broadway and 60th Street, 160 m and two minutes from Shake Shack. Vincent Gardner, trombonist with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, hosts and narrates; the Future of Jazz Orchestra plays.

This is a relaxed performance: movement and sound from the audience are welcome, lighting and volume are adjusted, families can come and go, and a Chill Out Space is there for a break. Coat check hands out fidgets and noise-cancelling headphones, plus assistive listening devices with t-coil loops; wheelchair seating and two wheelchairs are available on request.

Tickets are $10 for the balcony, $20 for the mezzanine and $25 for the orchestra; the seat map adds $12 in fees to each, so $22, $32 or $37 at jazz.org or on CenterCharge, 212-721-6500. Accessibility questions: 212-258-9877.
